For the flute music in the 20th century, the full-scale improvement of flute as initiated by Theobald Boehm has made it possible to implement original performance of brand new techniques. Flute has played all of its roles including its original tone color, chromaticism, polytonality and high techniques, and has fully represented solo instruments owing to development of new embouchures. These new attempts have been implemented creatively and diversely in artistic activities of composers, and there are a variety of new expression marks developed. Out of flute pieces composed variously by historical period, J. Ibert's Flute Concerto discussed in this study shows tendencies of neoclassical music, impressionism and romanticism which were parts of characteristic expression modes in his contemporary era of 1920's. Ibert tended to embrace various modes including neoclassical music, impressionism and romanticism, but tried to keep pursuing his own characteristics and create an original music world that is characterized by sharing French style and his own traits between neoclassical music and impressionism. His works belong to modern classicism but in pursuit of steadfast and unbounded composition techniques. Moreover, he enjoyed using artful phrase structure and instrumentation, his original techniques, abundant tone color and variable rhythms. Many of his music works show the conjunct motions of melody, clear-cut form and phrase structure, depictive nature, and original tone colors based on iterative melodies, functionless harmony in progress and more. In addition, Ibert also adopted several embouchures to highlight his own original form variations and sounds. These attempts helped him create brand new techniques beyond traditional rules, and have been also implemented originally and diversely in artistic activities of contemporary composers, so that there have been new expression marks developed up to date. Summing up, the purpose of this study was to examine and discuss J. Ibert's Flute Concerto so that it could help to get correct musical interpretations about flute music composed in the 20th century and perform contemporary music works.
