Since the nineteenth century, performance of pieces written in earlier periods had showed a tendency to be interpreted by virtue of contemporary performance practice, that is, romantic ways, not by their own practices. From then till now, every performance has been mainly played in the manner of 19th century. After the 1970s and 80s, however, it has been claimed that in the case of performing early musical works, Bach's music should be performed like a Bach and Mozart's music like a Mozart. The purpose of this thesis was to research for the diversities of performance interpretation, which is controversial in the circle of musical performance, by comparing and analyzing the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5 in A Major, K. 219 which is most frequently performed among his several Violin Concertos and is fond of by many music lovers. I had examined what Urtext of Violin Concerto No.5 and its authentic performance are, what kinds of its modern editions are, and what differences and characteristics between Urtext and various modern editions are. In the method of study, I intended to examine into Mozart's musical styles and performance practice of his day, traits of classic concerto style, and Mozart's violin concertos as the theoretical background. In the analysis of musical form and techniques for its performance, I intended to analyze the formal structure and to compare Urtext with various editions of the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5, in particular, laying stress on the bowing techniques. I had referred to Urtext(Barenreiter-Verlag), Joseph Joachim Edition(International Music Company), Sam Franko Edition(Taerim Press), Max Rostal Edition(Schott's Sohne), and Ivan Galamian Edition(International Music Company). As a result of comparisons between urtext and four editions, it is generally divided into two kinds of bowing techniques, even though they have differences partly. One is Galamian and Rostal's approaches, the other is Joachim and Franco's ones. In case of Galamian and Rostal, they are closed to Urtext and applied to the modern bowing techniques. In case of Joachim and Franco, on the other hand, they are quite differently applied to bowing techniques from Urtext. Differences between two kinds of editions are connected with editors' generations. Characteristics of performance interpretation are placed on diversity which is reason for existence of a number of performers. Therefore, whether authentic performance is needed or not, and which editions are desirable are placed on performer's free choice by his or her aesthetic standards.
