The objective of the present study is to examine how writers’ consciousness of cronotope is revealed in their works. In particular, we analyzed and compared the structural pattern of the consciousness of cronotope in the novels of two writers Kim Seung‐ok and Hwang Seok‐yeong. Through this study, we attempted to show the possibility that the consciousness of cronotope as a frame of reference in literary analysis can be a useful methodology of understanding literary works. The present study assumed that the pattern of intersection where cronotope meet each other is different from writer to writer. That is, depending on writers’ way of thinking, the knot of cronotope has a different pattern. According to the pattern of knot, cronotope vary in appearance. Thus, the present study paid attention to the point that the consciousness of cronotope is different from writer to writer. Here we attempted to explain the writers’ world view by introducing ‘the consciousness of cronotope’ as a more comprehensive concept. This study examined the consciousness of cronotope in Kim Seung‐ok’s and Hwang Seok‐yeong’s novels in the aspect that each writer has his own pattern of cronotope and the pattern implements the writer’s unique world of literature. By examining the cronotope of the writers’ works, we found that a writer’s world and his literary patterns form a huge pattern of works and each writer forms his own world by drawing a unique pattern. Based on the pattern of cronotope, this study analyzed Kim Seung‐ok’s and Hwang Seok‐yeong’s novels. The two writers were active as the standard‐bearers of Korean contemporary literature during the 1960s and 1970s. They commonly depicted individuals isolated in the age of industrialization and urbanization, but using different scenes, one ideological and the other realistic. In this study, the two writers’ novels were compared in two aspects, namely, ‘the image of diachronic time’ and ‘the image of synchronic space.’ We examined the development patterns of ‘the historical situation of Korea’ and ‘Korean literature in the 1960s and 1970s,’ and rediscovered ‘hometown and cities.’ In particular, we analyzed the novels, dividing the time axis and the space axis into ‘keeping a distance of time’ and ‘narrative structure of space.’ The two writers’ novels showed differences that can be paired up into ‘night↔dawn,’ ‘past↔present,’ ‘vertical↔horizontal’ and ‘stagnation↔direction.’ The fundamental reason for these differences was that the two writers’ ways of thinking were affected by different patterns of cronotope, namely, ‘circulation’ and ‘straightness,’ respectively. We scrutinized the elements listed above specifically in the two writers’ works. However, there are the difficulties that the scope of cronotope is ambiguous and that a specific frame of analysis cannot be formulated. The use of an inaccurate yardstick in analyzing works may produce different results at each analysis. Despite the limitation, it is obvious that cronotope have infinite possibility. Examining the consciousness of cronotope is peeping into a reduced universe and is a channel through which we can obtain the wisdom of life that awakes us to the truth of life and death. cronotope will provide ‘a frame’ for analyzing literary works through fusing various areas and literature. Due to the high possibility, people’s interest in ‘cronotope’ will increase higher. Therefore, before conducting research, we need to consider the possibility and limitation that cronotope can be helpful to exchange influence in literary works and other areas, and it is important to develop research methods that can avoid weaknesses and bring out strengths. Thus, it is hoped that future research on cronotope may be made repeatedly and diversely from many different angles.
