The IPMC, one of new sensing and actuating materials of electro-active polymers plated with metallic electrodes is well known for the fast and flexible bending actuation upon electric fields. The IPMC actuator can bend toward the anode under electrical fields. It has many merits of low driving voltage, large deformation, quick response, high durability and miniaturization. So, it has the best merit for bio-mimetic locomotion. Especially, it has the advantage for mimicking a fish-like motion because IPMC is useful to be actuated in water. Therefore the novel patterning fabrication technique with the multiple electrodes of the ionic polymer metal composite actuators was developed to mimic the swimming and flapping locomotion. The novel method is to combine electroplating with the electroless chemical reduction using the patterned mask. The advantages of this fabrication method are that the initial compositing between the polymer and platinum particles can be assured by the chemical reduction method, and the thickness of each electrode can be controlled easily and rapidly by electroplating. By using the fabricated actuator with a multiple degree of freedom, the oscillatory and undulatory waves of the flexible membrane actuator was generated and a twisting motion was also realized to verify the possibility of mimicking the fish-like locomotion. Present results show that this novel method combining electroplating with electroless plating can be a promising technique to easily pattern multiple electrodes and to implement the biomimetic motion of the polymer actuators with good mechanical bending performance. The FRF analysis was conducted to investigate the natural frequency and the damping factor by a mechanical shaker and direct electrical excitation through the swept-sine method. From this result, the proper Young’s modulus of Platinum was investigated under each condition and applied on expecting the vibration characteristics of patterned IPMC actuator such as natural frequency and mode shape.
