The purpose of this study was to develop a spoken language-focused language education program for young children and find out its effects on their expression and comprehension capabilities as well as their language and thinking abilities. It is also aimed at examining the changes in children's disposition and attitudes with regard to their spoken language skills.
The following questions are the core research topics:
1. How should the spoken language-focused language education program for young children be organized?
1) What should be the goal and objectives of the program?
2) What should be the contents of the program?
3) What should be the teaching method?
4) How should the program be evaluated?
2. What are the application effects of the spoken language-focused language education program for young children?
1) What effects does the program have on children's expression and comprehension capabilities?
2) What effects does the program have on children's language and thinking abilities?
3) What changes does the program bring about in the children's disposition and attitudes regarding their spoken language skills?
The program was developed through the following procedures:
First, a literature survey regarding the development and education of spoken language;
Second, in-depth interviews with 20 teachers at education institutes for young children in order to assess the current situation of spoken language education and find out the teachers' needs;
Third, the preparation of a draft program on the basis of the literature survey and the interview results; and,
Fourth, verification of the draft program's validity by four early childhood education professors and one Korean language and literature professor.
Through these development procedures, the program came to be composed of its goal and objectives, contents, teaching and learning methods as well as an evaluation system.
The subjects of this study were 40 children of ages 4, who were enrolled in two classes at a kindergarten located in I city, Jeollabuk-do. One class was assigned to be the experimental group and the other to be the control group. For the children in the experimental group, the spoken language-focused language education program was applied for 13 weeks. Independent t-tests were administered for these children to evaluate their expression and comprehension capabilities as well as their language and thinking abilities. The teachers' reflective journals were analyzed to find out the changes in the children's disposition and attitudes regarding their spoken language.
This study has revealed the following results:
1. The spoken language-focused language education program was composed in the following manner.
First, the goal and objectives of the program were constructed with the aim of improving young children's spoken language skills in terms of knowledge as well as processes and emotions.
Second, the contents of this program consisted of materials related to the aspects of knowledge, processes and attitudes. The knowledge of contents were divided into three parts of form, contents, and use. The form-related contents were consisted of phonology, morphology and syntax. The contents and use parts were composed of semantics and pragmatics, respectively. The process of contents were consisted of materials to help children learn procedural techniques needed for thinking based on perception, analytical thinking, synthesis thinking and reasoning thinking. The attitude of contents were organized in such a way as to help children develop positive dispositions to enjoy listening and speaking, and develop attitudes needed for correct listening and speaking.
Third, the teaching and learning methods of this program consisted of the principles of teaching and learning, the teacher's role, types of educational activities, group formation, and the physical environment for spoken language education.
The teaching and learning principles provided in this study included the following ones; 'Listening and speaking should be considered as a continuous process,' 'Opportunities to listen to a variety of sounds as well as abundant talk materials should be provided,' 'The teacher should use correct pronunciation, words and sentences, thus becoming a desirable model for listening and talking,' and 'The teacher should form an environment that encourages and supports listening and speaking.'
As teacher's roles, the program offered the following points; 'Providing opportunities for children to listen carefully and speak confidently', 'Setting an example so that children can use correct pronunciation, words and sentences', 'Asking appropriate questions to help children maintain dialogue', 'Showing proper responses so that children can enjoy listening and speaking', 'Fostering a permissive classroom environment that prompts children to listen and speak'.
The types of educational activities were composed of story sharing, language games, discussion after listening to fairy tales, and drama plays.
As for group formation, large groups should be the mainstream, but there should be a diversity so that mid-sized and small groups can exist concurrently. Depending on the interest and response of children, there may be transition from group activities to individual ones.
As for the physical environment, the program called for the arrangement of such items as a felt board, magnet materials, various dolls, story books, puzzle cards, materials for recording and listening, talking game cards, tape recordings of various sounds, photos and picture materials, telephones and microphones.
Fourth, this program is constructed in such a way that the validity of its goal and objectives, contents as well as its teaching and learning methods would be evaluated through the collection of the teachers' reflective journals and the products made as a result of the children's activities.
2. The spoken language-focused language education program brought about the following effects.
The program produced positive effects in terms of knowledge, process and attitudes regarding their spoken language skills. Specifically, there was improvement in the children's expression and comprehension capabilities as well as in their procedural skills needed for listening and speaking while thinking perceptively, analytically, synthetically and reasonably. The children also be to develop positive dispositions to enjoy listening and speaking assertively, curiously, fluently, flexibly, sensitively and exquisitely. They also developed attitudes that made them respect others by taking turns in listening and speaking.
The purpose of this study was to develop a spoken language-focused language education program for young children and find out its effects on their expression and comprehension capabilities as well as their language and thinking abilities.
