The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a group art therapy program on adolescent self-esteem. In order to achieve the purpose, the following hypotheses were set in the study: Hypothesis 1, the experiment group which received group art therapy would display significant improvement in self esteem. Hypothesis 2, the experiment group which received group art therapy would maintain the significant improvement in self esteem. The subjects of this study included 50 students(the experiment group N=25, the control group N=25) from two first year classes in H information and industry high school in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was employed to examine the effects of the experiment. But two students who transferred to other schools were excluded from the control group. Thus, the experiment group and the control group were composed of 25 and 23 students respectively. The test instrument employed in this study was the group art therapy program that the researcher reorganized on the basis of art therapy techniques introduced in ‘Art therapy technique’ by Kim, Gap-suk, Lee, Mi-ok, Choi, Seon-nam, Choi, Oy-seon(2006). The experiment group received a total of 20 sessions of group art therapy. It received a session a week for 50 minutes, but the control received none. The access to interaction or relationship of the group experiment therapy was initiated by Freudians and Sullivan(1953). According to Yun, Geum-ja's 'Adolescent art therapy method'(1996), Sullivan believed an individual's early life experience affects him throughout his whole life. Unlike Freud who said human beings' fundamental character structure is formed in infancy stage, he believed human beings' fundamental character structure changes throughout his whole life through interaction with people who are meaningful to him. Although groups have distinctive features, they also have common properties and dynamics. Therefore, beyond the distinctive features of each group, features that take into account interaction, structure, cohesiveness, society identity, and goal can be granted to members of art therapy group. Therefore, the group conceptualizes each individual as a social system in terms of an interacting perspective and the system and the group can be understood to be organic. That is, the internal world of an individual member affects the expectations of other members and is continuously being reshaped by personal perspectives and interaction of him and other members. Members of the group understand other members' behaviors, reduce tensions and build closeness with them, and stop defending themselves through meaningful events in the past and the disclosure of secrets. The group make members gradually attempt new methods ‘now here' to build a relationship with external world. Interaction allows the members of group to experiences feedbacks and feelings of other members. For example, if a member experienced another person as his frightening father, the hypothesis of the feeling about his behavior is set. The feeling and emotion about his behavior reflecting other members becomes valuable materials, providing any possibility of change through insight. Bloch & Crouch(1985) also said the fundamental therapy factor is the results of relational interaction, emphasizing the actual experience of relationship with other people. Along with the appearance of humanistic psychology in the 1950s, there were arguments over relationship and interaction between Sullivan and K.Horney, and between Fromm and traditional psychoanalyst. Later, Yalom researched and developed the concept of relationship. Psychotic symptoms and problems based on Yalom's theory of relationship have been continuously considered as the factors of inappropriate relationship. And group phenomenon is emphasized as revival of daily experiences of the group and individuals. Group art therapy which deals with dynamic group interaction does not set a specific group goal before the group intervention. This does not mean the goal is meaningless. It means as the interaction between the therapist and group members are considered as the essential part, the goal the therapist and group members have as an independent entity is little meaningful. The purpose of this access is to improve relationship. As a specific goal is not set, evaluation or diagnosis is not made to predict what will happen during group process. The therapist alone exercises his insight to predict things ahead based on past events. Thus he can better understand behaviors displayed during group process. According to interactive group access based on existential beliefs, the value and essence of human behaviors are not inherent but created from the existence itself. Thus the process of the group's interactive experience is as important as the result of the group's interactive experience Analytic approach to understanding the individual in the group values the member's individual power and emphasizes the therapist's role as a neutral observer. In the meantime, interactive approach values positive individual experience that is expressed outward through the group. Therefore, group therapy does not completely dichotomize its approach into analytic dynamics and interactive dynamics, though it values the therapist's role as a catalyst. The therapy process is composed of interactive ‘here-and-now' experience and ’there-and-then' of the past and future(chon. 1969). Art therapy makes use of art medium image, creation process of art works, and an individual's reaction to art works that reflects the individual's development, ability, character and interest, matters of concern, and conflicts. The practice of art therapy is based on the theories of human development and psychology. Such theories constitute tools of evaluations and treatments that control sentimental conflicts, facilitate self recognition, develop social skills, control behaviors, resolve problems, reduce worries, encourage present-oriented attitudes, increase self-esteem, and involve educational, psycho-dynamic, and cognitive treatment tools(Jeong yuu jou,1997). In order to verify the effects of the group art therapy, tests were performed before, immediately after and some time after the therapy. The average post- and pre-test scores and later and pre-test scores of the experiment group and the control group were verified through t-test and then comparatively analyzed. In addition, in order to examine subjective effects, which are difficult to be verified statistically, House-Tree-Person(HTP) pre-and post-test were performed among children in the experiment group. Also, the questionnaires distributed after the experiment were collected and analyzed. From the research, the following results were obtained. First, children in the experiment group who participated in the group art therapy program showed significant improvement in their self-esteem. Second, children in the experiment group who participated in the group art therapy program maintained the significant improvement in their self-esteem 30 days after the end of the experiment. Third, vocational high school students who participated in the group art therapy program mostly had negative sense of self. But after the experiment, most of them came to have positive sense of self. On the basis of the results of this study, it was confirmed that the group art therapy program is effective in improving vocational high school students' self-esteem.
