The objectives of the present study are to identify anxiety factors specific to new postgraduate music therapy students and categorize the characteristics of their anxiety, and by doing so, to reduce their anxiety through a song-focused music therapy program and help their school adaptation, and ultimately to prepare them as effective music therapists. The research was conducted at the Graduate School of Social Education of M University in Seoul. Seventeen music therapy students were consented to participate in the study and the procedure and objective of the research were explained to them. The participants were randomly allocated into the following three groups: music therapy group, video watching group, and control group with no intervention. The music therapy group received a song-focused music therapy intervention throughout over the 10 sessions (45 minutes per a session), and the pre and post-tests were conducted in session 1 and 10, respectively, using an anxiety and school adaptation scale readapted by the researcher. The results showed that the anxiety characteristics of the music therapy students' were categorized into four types: academic demands, clinical practices, music skills and future careers. These types of anxiety were analyzed according to the participants' major (music majors vs. non-music majors). No difference was observed in academic, clinical and career anxiety between music majors and non-music majors, but anxiety about music skills was different between music majors and non-music ones. Second, the song-focused music therapy program applied as an intervention to reduce the anxiety factors observed in the new post graduate music therapy students as presented above reduced their anxiety and helped their school adaptation. In the results of the pretest and the posttest on the students' anxiety, the music therapy group showed a decrease in the state-characteristic score by 2.25% in the posttest compared to that in the pretest, but the video watching group showed an increase by 1.58% and the control group an increase by 2.8%. This result suggests that the song-focused music therapy program is effective in reducing new post graduate students' anxiety. Third, in the results of the pretest and the posttest on school adaptation, the music therapy group showed an increase in the school adaptation score by 6.61% in the posttest compared to that in the pretest, but the video watching group showed a decrease by 0.59% and the control group a decrease by 2.43%. This result suggests that the song-focused music therapy program is effective in helping new post graduate students' school adaptation. Fourth, in the qualitative analysis made in the course of the music therapy program, we confirmed that the participants' anxiety was reduced through the process of finding each participant's personal anxiety factors, inducing the participants to support one another positively and relieving anxiety and that their school adaptation was helped by the formation of intimacy among the group members. Accordingly, the present study is considered meaningful in that it examined anxiety factors experienced by new post graduate music therapy students and executed a song-focused music therapy program as an intervention effective in reducing such anxiety factors and helping school adaptation.
