This study aims to assume a role as a functional model for indoor gardening design which may induce a harmonious encounter with an interior space and with nature, pursue an efficient work process, and utilize a consumer’s diverse and individual demands as reference data by analyzing the preference for those demands.
First, the study prepared a perspective plan of 9 interior design styles which were designated on the basis of existing research, and placed 11 plant images chosen from each style perspective plan through a preliminary test through a verification process by professionals. Then, the study conducted survey research and assessed the preference for harmony in the primary test 1. In the primary test 2, the study assessed each visual image of the 11 plants chosen through descriptive expression. The subjects of the study consisted of 44 construction/interior professionals, 40 gardening professionals, and 100 members of the general public. The study proceeded to the assessment of a plant image within the gardening professional group only. The study conducted a frequency analysis based on data from the primary test 1 by using an SPSS PC Statistics package and a cross analysis between groups and styles. The study organized descriptive assessment with 4 factors of refreshing(-), flexibility(-), massiveness(-), and decorativeness(-) using factor analysis based on data from the primary test 2. Then, the study verified differences in a visual image between target plants through a t-test and an ANOVA. Furthermore, the study proposed space creation types and construction cases through materials other than plants by analyzing the expressive techniques of each interior design style and materialized an indoor planting style according to an interior design style by combining the results of the primary tests 1 and 2 and construction cases.
As for the modern style, the casual style, Ficus benjamina, Ficus benjaminacv. Star Light, and Pachira aquatica were relatively in harmony, and the designated plants were common in terms of refreshing(+) and flexibility(+). As a result, it was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with relatively light green leaves and round and curved leaves. As regards the minimal style, F. benjamina, F. benjaminacv. Star Light, Dracaena reflexa "Pleomile", Nandina domestica, P. aqatica were relatively in harmony, The appointed trees were common in refreshing(+), It was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with a relatively light green color. Also, there was no difference in statistics of preferences valuation for the harmony of plants between the three styles(modern, casual, minimal). In addition, it was concluded to be appropriate for the modern style to use an object with a monotone color, a beige color, or a brown color with woods, glass, metals, or stones in a straight or a simple form, as materials other than plants. It was concluded to be appropriate to use point colors, which are primary brilliant colors in harmony with acryl and metals with a dynamic cheerful mood, for the casual style. Furthermore, it was concluded to be appropriate to use monotone colors or contrasting black and white colors with metals or stones in a straight form for the minimalist style.
As regards the natural style, F. benjamina, N. domestica, F. benjaminacv. Star Light, and Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens H.Wendl were relatively in harmony. The appointed trees were common in refreshing(+). It was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with a relatively light green color. Also, it was concluded to be appropriate to express the sensibility of nature by using natural materials such as stone and woods and natural colors, as materials other than plants.
As regards the romantic style, F. benjamina, F. benjaminacv. Star Light, C. Lutescens H.Wendl, and N. domestica were relatively in harmony, and they were common in refreshing(+) and flexibility(+). It was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with a relatively light green color and round and oval curve. Also, it was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a European object with a white tone or pastel tone, composed of marble and sandstone, as materials other than plants.
As regards the classic style, Ficus elastica, Dracena marginata, and Rhapis excelsa A.Henry ex Rehd were shown to be relatively in harmony, and the designated plants are common in light of refreshing(-) and massiveness(+). Also, it was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree that forms relatively darkish green color and large and hard leaves, and it was concluded to be appropriate to introduce dark colors and an object with golden ornaments which may present classic, brilliant, and massive appearances, as materials other than plants.
As regards the ethnic style, D. reflexa "Pleomile", D.marginata, and R. excelsa A.Henry ex Rehd were shown to be relatively in harmony, and the designated plants are common in flexibility(-). It was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree that forms relatively narrow and long leaves and straight line. The other side, it was concluded not to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with relatively round or oval curve. Also it was concluded to be appropriate to create a rough and old mood rather than a neat one by using natural materials such as woods, rattan, and strings, as materials other than plants.
As regards the Zen style, Dracaena Angustifolia, R. excelsa A.Henry ex Rehd, D. marginata, and N. domestica were shown to be relatively in harmony, and the designated plants did not share a common factor, but there was no difference in statistics of preference valuation for the harmony of plants between zen style and korean style. Therefore, it was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with a relatively simple oriental image. Also, it was concluded to be appropriate to produce a static mood utilizing the simple and restrained beauty of a blank space with natural materials such as stone and pebbles, as materials other than plants.
As regards the Korean style, N. domestica and R. excelsa A.Henry ex Rehd were shown to be relatively in harmony, and they were common in decorativeness(-). It was concluded to be appropriate to introduce a central tree with relatively simple oriental feelings. Also, it was concluded to be appropriate to create a mood by using traditional materials such as stone lanterns, Mulhwak (stone figures to put water), tiles, and jars, as materials other than plants.
As regards the preference valuation for harmony between the interior style and the indoor plants, there was a difference in all styles except for the minimalist and the classic styles, between the construction/interior professionals, the gardening professionals, and the general public, and there was also a difference in preference for five styles among the professionals group. As a result of analysis of the differences in preference for harmony based from gender, age, income, and housing of those in the general public group, there was no significant difference in the preference, Therefore, it was concluded that there was difference of preference judgement for harmony according to individual liking. In determining the harmony between an interior space and indoor plants, the construction/interior professionals were likely to observe the shape of leaves, whereas gardening professionals were likely to observe the entire types of the trees. The general public group was highly affected by the entire types of trees and personal taste in most cases and also by the shape of the leaves as well. Also, as regards the assessment of the preference for harmony between a space and plants, the rest of the factors, such as leaf color, leaf texture, and leaf density, were not shown to affect all groups.
