Human society has developed tremendously. But this remarkable development caused serious side effects. We made a mistake which disregarded what was really important to human beings such as environmental destruction, a gap between poor and rich, etc.. Through the realization of these problems, concept of 'Sustainability' and 'Sustainable Development' has been suggested. Because these concepts were come from reflection of what we have been doing, it's very meaningful. The concept of 'Sustainability' is being broadened and various efforts is being made in many different fields to realize the 'Sustainable future'. Design is no exception to this effort. Design has been grown with the industry sharing a common cause which made a good profit. Appearance, cost, a manufacturing process and convenience were the ones mattered to designers in 20th century. They didn't take care of their own responsibility and obligation in this society. The main problem was that they didn't consider how to design the product. They only focused on what to design for making more profit. Designers must have had a strong sense of responsibility and ethics because they design not only a single product but also the system itself. Therefore 'Sustainable design' is the combination of the traditional design methodology and environmental social considerations. Sustainable design suggests new direction of how to design. Despite of appearing new concepts for environmental quality or social justice, the proposal of 'fundamental' methodology or an alternative plan to realize 'Sustainability' is insignificant. Therefore the aim of this paper is that suggest concrete design direction to develop eco-friendly product by researching 'Eco-Design' and basic concept of 'Sustainability' which is the term that represents ecological paradigm. I analyzed the basic concept of 'Sustainability', 'Sustainable design', 'Eco-design' and classified different characteristics of each concept. Though this, I was able to deduce 10 items that lead to design eco-friendly product and made a check-list applying these items. And analyzed the cases through the check-list. Case study is composed of electronics, furniture, packages. This check-list could analyze not a single product but 3 products at same time, which could compare how much each product affects to the environment. Existing assessment tool such as LCA, Eco-indicator, etc. is focused on the life cycle of the product. But new assessment tool presented is also could evaluate the general role of design such as material selection, package, distribution, shape, size of the product, whether environmental quality is considered or not in the early step of product development, which make the scope of eco-friendly design methodology broaden.
