Library classification needs to facilitate library users' book finding. Currently, most libraries in Korea classify their collections according to Korean Decimal Classification. However, each type of libraries has different objectives, traits of users and collections. Moreover, its users' tasks and their needs are different. Therefore, library classification needs to reflect the characteristics of both the types of libraries and the users' information behaviors. In this sense, the research was conducted to investigate factors that facilitate users’ finding books by analyzing classifications of public library and bookstore. The main purpose of this study is not to recommend classifying public library' collections the way a bookstore does, but to figure out what makes the users' book finding more convenient by analyzing users' behaviors, and the classifications of both public library and bookstore. To carry out the research, preparatory research was conducted by interviewing users to examine whether users have similar needs, and whether they use similar ways and processes when finding books. Whether classification actually affects users' finding books or not was also investigated to check the achievability of the research. After the preparatory research, a survey was conducted to investigate users' book finding behaviors, degree of convenience in finding books according to different classifications and the causes of the convenience. The results of the survey were analyzed using SPSS. Then the factors other than classification that affect users' book finding were discussed additionally. The results of the research are as follow. First, users' information needs and the ways they find books were similar in both public library and bookstore.Second, classification influenced users' book finding.Third, bookstore's classification was found to be more convenient for the users in finding books.Fourth, the reasons for the convenience were 1) responsiveness to users' book finding behaviors and 2) classification's convenience in finding books. In case of responsiveness to users' book finding behaviors, multi-facets to access books, categories that reflect users' intentions, good accessibility to the frequent searching areas made book finding convenient. In the convenience of finding books, users felt that the bookstore's classification was easier to find their searching areas, better in representing interesting areas, and more suitable to their intentions of finding. Also the users felt books contained in the same category were more gathered than those of public library. Moreover, the classification scheme, and the titles of the categories were easier to understand, and the category titles were more familiar to the users. Among these factors, the understandability of category titles was especially high. The importance of apprehensible category titles was also found from the high correlation between public library's classification scheme and the titles of the categories in terms of their understandability. The results of factor analysis represented that bookstore's classification was easier for the users in finding books, and more comprehensible. In addition, multiple regression analysis showed that there are other factors than classification that affect users' book finding.Fifth, the factors other than classification that affect users' book finding were layouts, visibility and arrangement, signage, PCs, call numbers and labels, and the staffs, based on the survey. Thus, it can be concluded that classification reflecting the characteristics of libraries and user behaviors facilitates users' book finding. This study is meaningful as it thoroughly investigated users' book finding behaviors, and the degree of convenience in finding books according to different classifications, and analyzed the reasons for the convenience.
