As a Master’s Thesis, this paper summarizes my work, with particular focus on the 2008 solo exhibition “Home Inside Home.”I first examine how plant-like characteristics are demonstrated and expressed in the paintings and then develop a specific analysis, along theoretical grounds and expression methods, toclarify the point. Of the many objects in our homes, my focus is on plants which I believe are infused with an ego and personal adoration. I have conducted theoretical research relating to plant-like characteristics and have provided an explanation of the paintings. A plant does not challenge a human being’s existence rather the relationship is an interdependent one. In Taoism, nature is more than a world without a human life. Nature is never a materialistic or a technical object, but is a subject with vitality and values. Ecological thoughts, expressed by the Taoistic aesthetical view of nature, are based on the metaphysical Monism that denies the Anthropocentrism of the present era. In Taoism, nature does not merely refer to natural creatures, but rather it indicates the essential characteristic of the Tao, which stands behind the existence and movements of all creation. The Taoistic viewpoint of nature has a thread of connection with self-similarity in Fractal structure, which was suggested in post-modern science. In Fractal theory, natural phenomenon develop and organize with irregular rules and nature can be interpreted in the context of phrases such as ‘being itself’ or ‘being natural’, which is similar to the Taoist meaning of nature. This philosophy drives modern society back to nature. Even though human beings originally accepted ecological Ecocentrism, social development has taken them far from nature, leading to the dominance of ecological Anthropocentrism. However, human beings eventually show a deep attachment to nature, and hence, Ecocentrism reappears. In this paper, this phenomenon is referred to as “plant-like characteristics.” In plant-like characteristics, we can see living creatures in a microcosm and this is analogous with human desire. As for the methodology, I compare a Taoistic view of nature with that which prevails in modern society, and discuss positive heliotropism as well as the physical characteristics of plants as described in Fractal theory. The purpose of this study is to analyze how theoretical evidence is shown both in earlier paintings and in my own works. Furthermore, this study will interpret the expression of plant-like characteristics and the stories behind them. This paper is significant in that it provides a methodological direction, upon which I will base my pursuit of more sophisticated art through further advanced work.
