A test is an extrinsic stimulus everyone experiences, so school-aged children and teenagers experience test-related anxiety, either big or little. In particular, our country where interest and enthusiasm for education are high and written-test assessments considered important shows this phenomenon outstandingly. This article aims to study the fact how the test anxiety is formed in the brain that is core of human beings' thinking and mind and how it affects learners through establishing the following research issues based on brain science. Firstly, what is the definition of test anxiety and its cause? Secondly, what is test-related anxiety mechanism in brain and its effects on learners? Thirdly, how can keep the test anxiety level manageable? Test anxiety is an emotional response against anticipated failure in determining overall assessment on student performance both in quality and quantity. In cognitive science, test anxiety is triggered by an individual's unreasonable thought or wrong causes about the results of incidents but, on the other hand, in socio-cultural theory, the demand of the era, globalization and an information-oriented era, and our country's high enthusiasm for education and the influence from the others of deep import are considered important factors. According to the brain trinity theory in which human's brain is understood by 3 systems such as the brain stem, limbic system, and the cerebral cortex, the main brain center is amygdala, hypothalamus and the cerebral cortex. Amygdala in limbic system deals with emotional meanings and triggers emotional response instantly. Hypothalamus is a center that integrates emotional feeling gives a unique characteristic to a simple sensory experience. In terms of the cerebral cortex divided into right and left hemisphere, the left-brain deals with positive emotions like joy and, on the other hand, the right-brain deals with negative emotions like fear and anger, so the latter is closely related with test anxiety. The front lobe accepts nervous information from amygdala and, at the same time, controls and manages emotion and desire properly, especially, front frontal cortex is in charge of evaluating and controlling emotional impulse. If the cerebral cortex dealing with reason and amygdala dealing with emotion fail to harmony with each other, the intellectual activities of brain is not good and emotional confusion like unrest is experienced. Test anxiety is the results from broken relationships between two brains. To convey chemical information between cells, neurotransmitter is secreted and, especially, epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol are related with test anxiety. Epinephrine usually functions when learners feel fear or tension promoting physical defense reaction. Norepinephrine makes heartbeat faster and makes blood vessels and muscles be strained and helps consciousness to keep awaken. And also cortisol makes the brain and the bodies keep alert to prepare an emergency. Test anxiety gives a much influence to learners' attention or memory. Since the capacity of the thalamus and the ability of the front lobe are limited, the learners who experience high anxiety can show a problem in concentrating their attention. In addition, excessive secretion of norepinephrine causes high stress. But the appropriate level of test anxiety propels secretion dopamine and serotonin making learners' consciousness awaken and helping raise their concentration high. The learners who experience serious test anxiety show a decrease in forming memory and in keeping memory because there is no efficient LTP phenomenon in their brain. And dendrite inside hippocampus is shrunken leading to memory decreases. But, as the activation of amygdala that deals with emotion propels the LPT phenomenon, the proper level of test anxiety strengthens the learners' memory. Based on this research results, the ways to keep the proper level of test anxiety are as followings. First, enhance positive emotion. Comfortable environments and teacher's support propel the secretion of acetylcholine that activates hippocampus and the children's brains having the positive thinking and successful experiences produce dopamine, endorphin, and serotonin a lot and use them. To lessen a stress from test anxiety and to reduce a tension, it is necessary to have a feeling to protect each other and to receive a good social support in society, which shares thinking. Second, do exercise regularly and participate in artistic activities like music and art. Stress hormone accumulated in the body of the learners who are suffering from test anxiety is consumeed through oxygen consuming or muscle exercises. And music and art produce α wave which comes from the comfortable and stable brain helping to relax the over-tensioned brain and body and propelling the endorphin which gives a feeling of happiness and relief. Third, enhance the learners' emotion senses and management capability. The children having an excellent emotion sense to see and observe their feelings can look their feelings in a neutral position. Besides, the learners can solve lots of problems from test anxiety and use it rather in a helpful way to their own learning and memory with a high emotion management capacity. Fourth, keep the proper level of tension to motivate yourselves. If the anxiety level is too high or too low, it can be difficult to accomplish a task, but the proper level of test anxiety enhances task performance and learning accomplishments. I searched the brain mechanism of test anxiety and the ways to keep the proper level of test anxiety. This approach of brain science presents theoretical and scientific ground of the brain science, so I expect that it can help a number of learners who are suffering form test anxiety. It is useful to apply this program to teaching-learning classroom based on the proper level of test anxiety presented in this research.
