When exploring long term memory it has been suggested that retrieving certain information only once has more positive effect than encoding the same information repeatedly. In this respect, the testing effect is a phenomenon that helps increase long term memory for learned content. The testing effect is achieved by providing students with opportunities to retrieve information independently by conducting tests. Which can then be compared to data from students learning of the same content repetitively. Although the testing effect is a well-studied and robust phenomenon, the mechanism behind it is not clearly understood. Therefore, this study is will analyse the scientific evidence and cognitive theory of the testing effect. The purpose of this study is reviewing brain-scientific research related to the testing effect and providing the educational implications that can be utilized in an educational context. Firstly, LTP(Long-Term Potentiation) is related with the testing effect. Some excitatory neurotransmitters take important roles in LTP. Such as glutamate, norepinephrine, cortisol etc. These neurotransmitters are released in the brain when students are stressed. Taking tests can make these neurotransmitters exposed which results in an increase of LTP. This result supports some earlier research that argues that acute stress can be one of the main factors of the testing effect. Secondly, this study explores the differences in the two cognitive functions; the retrieval process in recall and the retrieval process in recognition. There are differences between recall and recognition in brain activity; more brain activity can be observed during recall processing. In addition, recall process is able to retrieve target information with less cues. Therefore, retrieval process in recall has more positive affects than retrieval process in recognition. Moreover, these results suggest that questions which initiate the recall process, such as a cued recall test or a free recall test are better than questions which need recognition process, for example multiple choice questions. Thirdly, when analysing the test effect it is important to acknowledge that taking tests causes stress. This statement was verified in chemical and electrical changes through advanced research. During the chemical change in the brain, the level of cortisol rises rapidly during tests. However the proper amount of cortisol can be seen to have a positive effect on long term memory like other hormones mentioned. Therefore adjusting the amount of stress will be important to analyse the testing effect. The electrical change was measured with an EEG(electroencephalogram) of the brain during tests in advanced research. Mentally healthy students who cope well with stress showed beta wave during tests. This is important because Beta waves are usually observed when concentrating or awakening. However, other students with high stress traits showed Theta waves that show slow brain activity. These waves can be caused by frustration or disappointment. These results are important because there is a positive correlation between cortisol and beta waves. This analysis suggests that tests can cause stress which can result in an improvement in brain activity in optimal levels of stress. Lastly, acute stress during tests can cause situational test anxiety which has a positive effect on learning and memory with ideal levels of anxiety. Adrenaline is one of the hormones which are exposed when students are under anxiety. It makes sensory receptors sensitive, improving the probability information uptake. Therefore, learning can happen easily with little stimulus. Furthermore, humans feels anxiety, the Amygdala, the part of the brain which deals with emotions, starts to work and can have a low threshold value of LTP. However, students with high anxiety traits have a disadvantage in the testing effect because much working memory is allocated to regulate emotions. The first educational implication of this discussion is that students have to retain an optimal level of stress or anxiety during examinations. Optimal levels of stress or anxiety induce LTP. To retain an ideal level of these stimuli, students can limit the time they spend on solving the problems during a test or they can set some small goals to motivate themselves. Another educational implication of this study is that teachers have to develop more descriptive questions rather than multiple-choice questions. A descriptive style of question asks for the recall process. Therefore, recall process gives a positive effect on memory than the recognition process. In conclusion, it would be more effective for teachers to use tests as a method of learning. The final educational implication is that students and teachers have to change their recognition of testing. Using tests for learning rather than evaluating can reduce test anxiety because test anxiety is deeply related with the way students think about tests. To change the cognitive reaction in students to testing, the meaning of assessment has to be reduced. For this, teachers can use several ways l to decrease the link between test and assessment, such as, using self-tests, covert retrieval practice, open book tests or ungraded pop quizzes. This study analysed brain-scientific studies related with the testing effect and drew several educational implications from this analysis. By supporting some brain-scientific reasons for the testing effect, this study suggests some effective and practical ways to use the testing effect in a real educational context as a learning and teaching method.
