Korea is currently undergoing more rapid aging population than other developed countries. As a result, supporting the elderly is increasingly becoming a serious social problem. Thus this study examined the attitudes of the people in their 20s and 30s, who will support their own parents in the near future, displayed toward supporting the elderly and, on the basis of examination results, made suggestions on policies to support the elderly.
In the study, literature review and empirical analyses were carried out in parallel. In chapter two, titled "Theoretical Background", following the first chapter, titled "Introduction", the elderly support, the consciousness of the elderly support, the factors affecting the consciousness of the elderly support, reasons behind the elderly support-related problems, and life care system for the elderly, and the duty of supporting the elderly were examined based on related literature. In chapter three, a questionnaire containing questions on family relationship, the perception on the elderly, and the consciousness of the elderly support was produced. After that, a survey of men and women in their 20s and 30s living in Seoul and its metropolitan area was conducted using the questionnaire. In chapter four, analyses were performed on the collected data and results were obtained from the analyses. In chapter five, conclusions and suggestions were made on the basis of study results.
The study results were summarized as follows. First, as to the question of at what age is a person considered elderly, half of the respondents answered "age 65 and older." They felt pity for the elderly. Most of the respondents thought the problems of the elderly were serious and said the most serious problem of the elderly was financial inability.
Second, a higher proportion of the respondents wanted to live with their parents to look after them when the parents get older. They replied it was the duty of children toward their parents. As to the question of who was responsible for supporting the elderly, the highest proportion of the respondents said "the government, society, and family." With regard to a desirable way of living for the elderly, more than half of the respondents replied "living separately from children, but close to children's house." In addition, lots of respondents thought that the supporter's financial ability was the factor that affected the elderly support most.
Third, the respondents' overall levels of consciousness of supporting the elderly including economic, emotional, and physical supporting were found to be more than moderate. Especially, the consciousness of economic support was the highest.
Fourth, the consciousness of economic support displayed significant differences with regard to the followings: the demographic factors -age, marital status, birth order, religion, and monthly income per household; family relationship- whether or not parents are alive, experience of living with grandparents, whether or not the respondent currently lives with parents, home education, parents' preparation for the elderly life, relationship with parents, and relationship with siblings.
Fifth, the consciousness of emotional support showed significant differences with regard to the followings: the demographic factors -birth order and religion; family relationship -whether or not parents are alive, experience of living with grandparents, parents' preparation for the elderly life, relationship with parents, and relationship with siblings.
Sixth, the consciousness of physical support displayed significant differences with respect to the followings: the demographic factors -age, marital status, birth order, and religion; family relationship -experience of living with grandparents, whether or not the respondent currently lives with parents, home education, parents' preparation for the elderly life, relationship with parents, and relationship with siblings.
Some suggestions were made on the elderly support. First, the current levels of consciousness of supporting the elderly needs to be sustained. For this, prejudice and wrong information of the elderly and elderly support should be rectified. Besides, the opportunities of voluntary activities for the elderly and programs bridging the generation gap should be created to increase contact between the elderly and the youth. Second, the overall level of consciousness of the elderly support was more than moderate. Especially, the consciousness of economic support was the highest, confirming the results of previous studies that the younger people were, the higher their consciousness of supporting their parents was. However, as the respondents were older, their level of consciousness of supporting parents decreased. This was because they were forced to shoulder heavy burden of supporting both children and parents. Therefore, society's sharing of the burden of supporting the elderly should be specified. Third, people in their 20s and 30s thought that financial problem is one of the most serious problems related to the elderly. They also considered the supporter's financial ability as one of the factors that affects the elderly support most. In conclusion, it is important to provide those who take care of elderly parents with financial supports such as the elderly supporting benefits, tax-exemption, and financial benefits. Lots of respondents said they would live with their parents when their parents get older. The suicide rate of the Korean elderly living alone has reached a serious level. In order to resolve such problem, the government needs to come up with policies to support policies for those who live with the elderly parents. In addition, domiciliary welfare services should be generalized to relieve the burdens of family that supports elderly parents.
