Today’s human life is affected more severely and frequently by high oil price and disasters arising from the changes of climatic environment caused by green house gases. In order to cope with such changes, countries are competing for the development of new renewable energies that replace fossil fuel and enhance the efficiency of energy use. Fuel cell is a new renewable energy. Although it uses fossil fuel, it generates electricity and heat using hydrogen and its energy efficiency is much superior to existing systems while minimizing the discharge of pollutants. For these advantages, many efforts have been made to research and commercialize fuel cells. There are various types of fuel cells, but this study carried out theoretical examination and experiments on solid polymer fuel cells. Recently many empirical researches are being made on the monitoring of domestic fuel cells as well as on fuel cell cars. In this study, we made theoretical examination on how impurities in fuel and air supplied to fuel cells affect the fuel cells. In addition, we conducted an experiment on the effects of hydrogen fuel containing impurities on the performance of fuel cells. We also tested the effects of the concentration of impurities in hydrogen fuel such as methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide on the short‐term and long‐term operation of fuel cells. The experiment tested the effects of impurities in fuel according to their concentration using unit fuel cells activated for the experiment. In previous researches, unit cells were activated manually using a non‐standardized method. In this study, however, activation time was shortened and full activation was attained by activating unit cells made in this study repeatedly until the target performance was reached using the I‐V performance curve. The advantages of this method are that the same performance can be obtained from activating different unit cells, that activation time is short, and that the activation process can be standardized. This method is expected be useful for standardized and efficient experiments in future researches using unit cells. In order to examine effects on performance in long‐term operation, first, we supplied fuel containing methane 10%, 20% and 30% to the cathode of a unit cell and observed the change of performance during 10 hours’ operation. Second, we supplied fuel containing carbon dioxide 10%, 20% and 30% and observed the performance. Lastly, we supplied fuel containing carbon monoxide at below 1ppm, 1ppm, 2ppm, 3ppm, 5ppm and 10ppm and examined the change of performance by observing and mechanically analyzing the performance. Fuel containing methane 10% and 20% did not affect the performance but fuel containing methane 30% changed the performance at a high current‐density region. It was concluded that the lowered performance was caused not by the reduction of activation by the poisoning of catalyst with methane but by mass loss in transfer from the unit cell to gas oil due to resistance. Accordingly, we confirmed the possibility that methane can be used as an alternative to N2 for purge when stopping fuel cells or storing them for a period. The second experiment was about the effect of carbon dioxide in fuel at concentration of 10%, 20% and 30% on the performance of fuel cells. In the experiment, when the concentration of carbon monoxide in hydrogen fuel was 20% and current density was high, CO2 was converted to CO with the rise of temperature and it affected the catalyst and changed the performance. Accordingly, it was concluded that the concentration of carbon dioxide should be limited below 20% in fuel reformulation. In addition, the performance changed considerably when the concentration of carbon dioxide in fuel was 30%. When performance was lowered by carbon dioxide in fuel, the performance before the supply of impure fuel was restored by supplying pure hydrogen to the cell. The last experiment was about the change of fuel cell performance when the concentration of carbon monoxide in fuel was below 1ppm, 1ppm, 2ppm, 3ppm, 5ppm and 10ppm. In general, the concentration of carbon monoxide is restricted to below 10ppm in hydrogen fuel supplied to fuel cells. This study experimented on how the performance was affected when fuel cells were operated long at concentration of 1ppm, 2ppm, 3ppm, 5ppm and 10ppm. In the polarization curve experiment, until current density of 1400mA/cm2, no change in performance was observed at 1ppm and 3ppm. From 1400mA/cm2 and above, the supply of fuel containing CO at 3ppm had some impact on the performance. From current density of 1800mA/cm2, performance was lowered by around 4% at 3ppm, by around 7% at 5ppm, and by around 20% at 10ppm. This is probably because carbon monoxide poisoned platinum catalyst at a high current‐density region and reduced the area of catalytic activity. In 10 hours’ operation, the supply of fuel with CO at 1ppm lowered the performance by around 2%. When fuel with CO at 3ppm was supplied at 0.63V and 10 hours passed, the cell voltage dropped to 0.47V, showing the fall of performance by 25.4%. In the experiment on recovery, when pure hydrogen was supplied the cell voltage was recovered up to 0.619V (98.2%). In the experiment on the concentration of CO impurity, the performance dropped to 0.40V (by 39.3%) and 0.254V (by 61.9%), respectively, at 5ppm and 10ppm. In the experiment on recovery, when pure hydrogen was supplied the cell voltage was recovered up to 0.629V and 0.614V, respectively. When the concentration of CO impurity was high in fuel, the performance fell rapidly and to a lower level of cell voltage (V). In order to analyze the cause of such changes in performance, we conducted impedance and cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. The results of this study are as follows. As nitrogen was used in stopping fuel cell operation we had to use a separate purge, but in our experiment on methane impurity, we confirmed that methane does not have an effect on the catalyst. Accordingly, it was concluded that it is possible to simplify facilities and reduce costs through purge using natural gas fuel, 90% of which is methane, for stopping fuel cells or storing fuel cells for a period. In order to prevent the lowering of fuel cell performance, carbon monoxide in fuel should be restricted below 20%, and the lowering of performance can be prevented by controlling carbon monoxide impurity below 10ppm so that it does not accumulate in the fuel system. This suggests that fuel cells can be operated for a long time without the lowering of performance if impurities accumulated in the system are purged or the concentration of impurities is controlled by supplying pure hydrogen. Accordingly, in long‐term operation, fuel cell performance can be optimized through controlling the concentration of impurities that affect the performance. The present study on the change of performance by impurities is expected to contribute to improvement in the efficiency of fuel cell operation through the efficient fuel cell activation method and the effective control of the effects of impurities during operation.
