Soccer players experience various psychological conflicts at the time of penalty shoot-outs depending on the circumstantial factors in addition to the their kicking skills. This article aimed to identify sources of stress that players experience, their strategies to cope with the stress, and their habitual behaviors in this circumstance. This study also examined the kicking order the players prefer or avoid. This study was based on 300 soccer players from 20 middle schools in Kyunggi-do. The players were given multiple choice questions and open-answer questions. Analysis of the questionnaire revealed the following results. First, all levels of players wanted to avoid being the first or fifth kickers, and they preferred being the second or third kickers. Second, the players showed 7 types of habitual behavior at the moment of penalty shoot-outs: target decision, observance of jinx, goalkeeper check, breathing, the numbers of footsteps, prayers and others. As for the target decision, many players answered that they looked at the opposite direction to which they would kick the ball. Especially for 8 or 9th grade soccer players in the middle schools answered "I take a deep breath." which was related to the behavior of breathing. These behaviors provided the clues to goalkeepers to predict the direction of the shoot. Third, 7 domains were identified as sources of stress of soccer players at the time of penalty shoot-outs: the concern about failure and mistakes, conflict on the target decision, lack of confidence, external factors, lack of kicking skills, decrease in concentration, and increase in tension and anxiety. Finally, it was found that soccer players used 14 strategies to cope with this stressful moment: concentration, self-consolation, self-confidence, autosuggestion, target setup, self-assurance, immersion, practice, self-control, mind control, avoidance, image training, deep breathing and meditation. More specifically, to cope with the concern about failure and mistakes, they preferred these strategies in the following order: deep breathing, mind control, concentration, and self-consolation. When players were not confident enough, they tried to regain self-confidence and auto suggestion. In particular, for all levels of players, when they felt lack of confidence or they had concern about failure and mistakes, they used strategies to boost self-confidence and take a deep breath. Middle school soccer players experience extreme psychological turmoil at the moment of penalty shoot-outs as this study has demonstrated. Therefore, it is imperative for soccer coaches to understand and consider these psychological aspects during the competition contexts.
