It has been a technical issue how to evaluate the reliability of automotive parts. Automobiles and parts manufacturers try to develop highly durable parts with minimum efforts. It is required to design new vehicle as fast as possible to reduce development costs. Conventional development processes need to be replaced by efficient alternatives. A method using computer simulation is considered as a candidate to replace the conventional method to assess the durability of automotive parts. In this thesis, the reliability of the light-weight aluminium Lower Control Arm (LCA) was analyzed and tested. Analysis results were verified by tests and their corelation was proved. The reliability evaluation was verified under the Europe standard load condition for its expected life. The study was implemented in the following sequence. First of all, the structural analysis considering the limit load on the light-weight aluminium LCA was performed. Then the model verification test was followed and its results were compared with those from the analysis. Finally, the correlation between the analysis and the test was assessed. The durability analysis of structure is to estimate the stress distribution for unit input load using finite element methods. The damage distribution of structure is measured where load condition and S-N curve were used as input. In case of the durability analysis, either of the stress superposition method and the mode superposition method is applied depending on the dynamic characteristics under load condition. In general the stress superposition method is applied to the automotive suspension parts, which is considered as pseudo-static because their natural frequencies are in the order of hundreds. The stress superposition method was applied to LCA for the durability analysis in this thesis. LCA was 3-dimensionally modeled and analyzed using a commercial software I-DEASⓡ. With the results of finite element analysis, the durability analysis was carried out with the stress superposition method. In this process, a commercial software FEMFATⓡ was used. In addition, specimens from an aluminium LCA were tested to obtain S-N curve which would be used in the durability analysis. The uni-axial durability test with constant amplitude input was performed, The life span and damaged parts with every load were identified. The reliability of the durability analysis was evaluated by comparing the analysis results with those from tests. The damaged parts and the durable life time from the analysis are compared with the counterparts from the test. The order of damage was evaluated using the durability analysis with the real load condition, which was obtained from the real vehicle test. In order to verify the target life of parts for 320,000 km in the Europe standard, it is required to perform the durability test by driving 320,000 km. Because driving 320,000 km is very time consuming, it is preferred to test the vehicle on the Proving Ground, where the damage index is much higher. The driving load which is measured from the Proving Ground test is converted to the load corresponding to the real road. The load signals were generated from the wheel force transducer on the analogous vehicle whose the suspension characteristics were similar to the proving ground. In this process normalization was used in order to account for the difference in the axle load. The load from the wheel transducer was reproduced and applied to the target parts on the 3-axis test machine. The x-axis and y-axis load signals were measured from strain gauges on the ball joint of the target parts. In order to accelerate the test, signals whose magnitudes were small were neglected because their effect on damage was insignificant. The 2-axis reliability test and analysis of LCA were performed. In this thesis, the reproduced durable test was carried out by accelerating the regenerated actuation signals corresponding to 320,000 km. In result, the reproduced durable test time was reduced to 11.5 days from around 30 days. Moreover, the durable evaluation methodology on the target parts was proposed by applying the proposed methodology on LCA, which proved to be more realistic than the result from the durable test with the constant amplitude input signals.
