This study investigated social reciprocation impairment of autistic children through joint attention which is considered as a precursor of theory of mind. 11 autistic and 11 normal children were participated. Their joint attention was observed with Early Social Communication Scale. Four different aspects of joint attention (i.e, initiating joint attention, responding to joint attention, initiating behavioral request, and responding to behavioral request) were compared. The findings were listed below. First, autistic children performed poorer than normal children in initiating and responding to joint attention. Especially they showed little eye contact and alternation to initiate joint attention. Similarly, they also showed little point following and gaze following in responding to other's initiation of joint attention. Second, autistic children showed eye contact, reaching, appealing, pointing to initiate behavioral requests. However, they did not showed giving and giving with eye contact. This might be because children with autism who were older than normal children could perform the task without help of adults. Third, autistic children performed similarly to the normal children in responding to other's behavioral requests. This might be because they learned how to respond to the order and gesture which either parents or teachers typically use. These results suggest that autistic children, compared to the normal children, have difficulty in initiating and responding to joint attention, but not in initiating and responding to behavioral request. Moreover, autistic children have more difficulty in responding to rather than in initiating joint attention. However, this study has several limitations. The number of autistic children was so small that it is hard to generalize the findings to other autistic children. In addition, autistic and normal children were tested in different testing environment. Therefore, in future study, it is necessary to examine social reciprocation of autistic children by testing more samples in strictly controlled testing environment
