Origin of transverse cracks on continuous cast slab have been widely studied in two decades. Although consequent results from previous studies have distributed to reduce the number of transverse cracks on the slab by means of alloy composition and process optimization, they are still significant problems on low alloy steels. In addition, development of hot direct rolling(HDR) and mini-mill(TSC) process arose the needs of additional studies on process variables. Hot shortness due to tramp elements such as Cu and Sn tends to develop into surface cracks during following rolling process. Iron is preferentially oxidized in reheating process of slabs thereby tramp elements remain in molten steel ; tramp elements often found in steel are Cu, Sn, Pb, As, Sb, etc. These residual elements build up in the subscale layer due to the selective oxidation of iron during the reheating process. Therefore these elements cause the hot shortness and cracking during hot working processes such as continuous casting, high speed casting and hot direct rolling. In the case of mini-mill, edge cracking and surface cracking are caused at mini-mill slab since the hot ductility is decreased by these elements. The objectives of the study were to assess the influence of Cu and Sn on the hot ductility using hot tensile test. In addition, the influence of Ni on neutralizing the detrimental effect of Cu on hot ductility was also investigated. Hot ductility tests were carried out using a hot deformation simulator (cast simulator). The specimens were heated to 1250 ℃ for solution treatment and then held for 300 s before cooling at a rate of 5 ℃/s to test temperatures in the range of 700~1100 ℃ (50 ℃ intervals) with strain rates of 5×10^(-4)/s and 10^(-2)/s. In addition, the hot ductility was investigated for the samples made from the part of surface of the mini-mill slab and remelted slab, in order to increase the applicability of the data obtained. 1. For the steel containing 0.18wt.% carbon, the hot ductility was remarkably increased with increasing strain rate regardless of sample preparation method. The hot ductility data obtained from two kinds of samples described previously showed similar values in low temperature region, and high R/A values for the sample prepared from remelted slab in high temperature region. The hot ductility of the low carbon steel was decreased with increasing Cu content at all test temperatures. Addition of Sn to Cu containing steel leads to even worse hot ductility, especially the worst values in low temperature region. 2. As a result of the study on the effect of low cycle fatigue on hot ductility of carbon steel, the effect of low cycle fatigue on hot ductility test of low carbon steel was unnoticeable. In case of midium carbon steel, hot ductility decreased due to low cycle fatigue in high temperature region but in low temperature region, increasing ferrite fraction recovered the hot ductility. In case of high carbon steel, the low cycle fatigue on ductility test increase the RA values throughout the entire test temperature, and the ductility trough moved to lower temperature and was widened. Introducing low cycle fatigue during cooling to test temperatures increased the hot ductility more than that by low cycle fatigue in test temperatures. It is caused by the reduced cooling rate.
