The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of the attachment styles of teenagers on their self-esteem and interpersonal relationship. Three research questions were posed in this study: 1. What differences do the gender, school grade and attachment style of adolescents make to their self-esteem? 2. What differences do the gender, school grade and attachment style of adolescents make to their interpersonal relationship? The subjects in this study were 168 sixth graders and 184 middle school ninth graders in the city of Daejeon. The selected sixth graders attended an elementary school where this researcher worked. A survey was conducted by utilizing an attachment scale, self-esteem inventory and interpersonal relationship inventory to address the research questions. The interpersonal relationship inventory aimed at assessing human relations with parents and friends. Two-way ANOVA was utilized to see if there were any significant disparities at the p<.01 and p<.05 level of significance. The findings of the study were as follows: When the attachment styles of the teens were classified, a stable attachment style was most prevalent, followed by an anxiety- ambibalance style and avoidant one. By gender and grade of school, the distribution of the stable attachment style was similar regardless of gender and grade of school. The avoidant style was more common than the anxiety-ambibalance style in the group of boys, and the anxiety- ambibalance style was more dominant in the group of girls. In the elementary schooler group, the avoidant style was more widespread than the anxiety-ambibalance style, and the anxiety-ambibalance style was more rampant than the avoidant one in the middle schooler group. As for the impact of the attachment styles on self-esteem, the teenagers who had the stable style were ahead of the others with the avoidant and anxiety-ambibalance styles in that regard. The former had a better self-confidence and prized themselves better than the latter. In regard to the influence of the attachment styles on interpersonal relationship, it could be concluded that the adolescents with the stable style excelled the others. The former teenagers found themselves to have a more affiliative relationship with parents and friends and mingled with more affectionate people. This study demonstrated that the attachment styles of adolescents affected their self-esteem and interpersonal relations, and established that the stably attached teens were more positive and had a better self- esteem, which denoted that they viewed themselves as competent, important, successful and valuable. And they deemed themselves to have a more affiliative relationship with parents and friends and got along with affectionate people. Therefore it could be said that the attachment styles had an impact on interpersonal relationship, and that exerted an influence on not only the initial stage of life but adolescence.
