Hydrogen in known as a clean renewable energy source because its product of reaction with oxygen is only water. it has a high energy yield of 122 kJ/g. Conventional hysicochemical methods for hydrogen production require electricity derived from fossil fuel combustion or nuclear fission. Among biological processes, dark-fermentative process produce H₂ at a higher rate than photosynthetic processes. In addition, dark-fermentative production can convert organic wastes to more valuable energy resources.
This study was conducted to analyze influence of pre-treatment methods, and to seek optimum operating conditions for high fermentative bio-hydrogen production from biomass in batch mode.
Various batch experiments of hydrogen production from biomass were conducted to investigate the effects of biomass concentration(0~150 g/L), pre-treatment methods, Na^(+) concentration(0~3%), volatile fatty acid(VFAs) concentration(0~30 g/L), and heavy metal concentration on hydrogen production by using acid-treated anaerobic mixed culture as seed.
The hydrogen production yield increased obviously with increasing biomass concentration from 0 to 80 g/L and then slightly decreased when the biomass concentration increased from 120 to 150 g/L. The maximum amount of hydrogen yield (67 mL-H₂/g_(substrate)) was obtained at the biomass concentration of 80 g/L.
The effects pre-treatment of waste activated sludge(WAS) on hydrogen production were examined. WAS pre-treatment, include treatments with acid(pH₂), alkali(pH12) methods. After alkali pre-treatment, organic matters such as WAS were solubilized increasing soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) by 3.8 times. The highest hydrogen yield ( 63 mL-H₂/g_(substrate) ) was observed with the acid pre-treatment method.
The batch experiments were conducted to investigate the inhibitory effects of Na^(+) addition on hydrogen production from biomass by using anaerobic mixed cultures. Experimental results showed that addition of Na^(+) at 0.25% only slightly increased hydrogen production, and addition of Na^(+) at 0.25~0.5% imposed a moderate inhibitory effect on hydrogen production. At addition of 3%, Na^(+) had a strong inhibitory influence on hydrogen production.
Biomass fermentation to hydrogen results in the production of acetic and butyric acids. The inhibitory effect of these acids on hydrogen production was examined by adding these acids into the reactor. Acids added to the feed at a concentration of 4 g/L slightly decreased hydrogen roduction and 10 g/L of butyric acid, 20 g/L of acetic acid decreased hydrogen production by >90%.
Continuous hydrogen production was investigated in a continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor using dog food. The hydraulic retention time(HRT), pH, and temperature were maintained at 24h, over 5.5±0.1, and 35±1℃, respectively. The hydrogen production increased from 0 to 1 day, and then decreased when the propionic acid production increased from 1 to 5 g-COD/L.
The effects of ionic Cr, Cu, Zn, Fe on fermentative hydrogen production were examined using batch reactor. The Hydrogen production was reduced by 50%, 20% that came into contact with 160 mg-Cr/L, 80 mg-Cu/L However, low concentrations of 20 mg-Cr/L resulted in peak 10% in hydrogen production stimulation. Fe^(2+) was able to enhance the hydrogen production. The maximum cumulative hydrogen quantity of 25 L were obtained at the Fe^(2+) concentration of 300 mg/L.
