Development of cool summer fabric from wool fibers, which are used more in winter apparel, will increase its value and allow wider application and consumption of wool fibers. Submicron inorganic particles which scatter and absorb light may be used to treat wool fabric for cool effect. However, due to the difficulty of permeation of inorganic particles, low pH, instability of the dispersion, a feasible finishing process has not been developed. Therefore, the application of fumed silica whose primary particle size is less than 40㎚ was attempted to study the possibility of developing a finishing process for cool wool. The particle size in the aqueous dispersion of fumed silica with hydroxyl groups on the surface, ranged 0.04 ~ 0.27㎛ and its average size was 0.1㎛. The dispersion could easily be prepared and was stable over 5 days. Add-on of wool fabric treated at 80℃, for 30 minutes in a 10 wt% dispersion was 5% after 1 washing cycle and 3.2% after 5 washing cycles. It appears that fumed silica particles have permeated between or around wool scales while they were opened up by swelling in water. The partial durability of fumed silica to washing appears to be due to the mechanical fixation and the interaction between the hydroxyl group of fumed silica and wool. The fumed silica was effective in blocking UV and the ultraviolet protection factor of the fumed silica treated wool fabric was 43. The "cool wool" effect determined by the temperature increase on irradiation for 30 minutes was 1.5℃ less then in the case of original wool fabric. Thus the development of "cool wool" using fumed silica appears possible.
