For supplying safe drinking water, control of biofilm formation and corrosion in drinking water distribution system as well as improvement of water treatment system is necessary. Especially, biofilm on water pipe causes deterioration of biological water quality and microbiologically induced corrosion, and leads to decrease durability of pipe and deterioration of water quality with formation of corrosion by-products. So prevention and control of biofilm in drinking water system is needed. Biofilm in water distribution system can be affected by various parameters such as organic matters in water, pipe materials, water temperature, water flow velocity and so on. Among those, organic matters, which can be used by bacteria in biofilm as a nutrient, have been considered as a main parameter for control of biofilm. Therefore, kinds and concentration of organic matters that related to biofilm formation have been studied. Although AOC, a sort of BOM was proposed as a biofilm control parameter, it has been used restrictively because limitation of biological analysis. For removal of already formed biofilm and corrosion by-products on pipe, pipe replacement is the best. However, when pipe replacement was unnecessary or hard, flushing has been generally applied and applicable trenchless pipe rehabilitation methods were developed. In spite of the convenience of flushing, there were few studies about flushing techniques and flushing conditions related to pipe materials and especially side effects of flushing, such as change of pipe surface and biofilm regrowth after flushing. So the purposes of this study are to evaluate effect of fractioned natural organic matters and pipe materials on biofilm formation and to validate microbiologically induced corrosion by biofilm. Through biofilm regrowth examination, the effects of pipe washing with and without ozone were compared. To evaluate flushing effect, water quality after flushing in M site of Seoul was monitored. Five kinds of process waters which have different concentration of organic fractions; sand filtered water(SF), biological activated carbon treated water(BAC), microfiltration filtered water(MF) from Gu water treatment plant in Seoul, and 2 kinds of tap waters passed through different pipe length from GU water treatment plant(GT, UT) were experimented. These waters flowed through the model pipeline apparatuses in which coupons of 4 kinds of pipe materials; stainless steel pipe(STS), polyvinyl chloride pipe(PVC), copper pipe(CP) and cast iron pipe(CIP) were mounted, 1L/min of flow velocity during 395 days. The concentration of biofilm was analyzed by HPC and bacteria species in biofilm were identified by MIDI system. The NOM of process waters was fractionated by LC-OCD. The corrosion rate of metal pipe was evaluated by weight loss method. Correlation between NOM fractions and biofilm, and that of between biofilm and corrosion rate were evaluated by principal component analysis and regression analysis. After washing corroded pipe coupons with and without ozone, coupons was set in model pipeline apparatus to investigate biofilm regrowth for 10 days. Ductile cast iron pipeline buried in M site of Seoul in 1980 was flushed with 0.9 ~1.0m/s of water flow velocity and water quality of 5 sites in flushed and unflushed pipeline was monitored. Characteristics of NOM fractions in process waters The removal efficiency of TOC was highest in BAC and lowest in MF. Comparing with SF, BAC showed high performance in organic materials removal by absorption and biodegradation but MF without optimum coagulation caused high concentration of NOM including high proportions of humic substances. Removal of HOC was below 13.1% in all process waters. UT that had longer distribution line than GT showed trend increasing of TOC. Characteristics of HPC in process waters and biofilm HPC of BAC was the highest because it is biological degradation process. With the enhanced exclusion of microfiltration membrane, HPC of MF was lower than SF. Among HPC of GT and UT which was chlorinated SF, UT contained lower HPC with higher residual chlorine. In spite of residual chlorine, HPC of GT was higher than that of MF. Biofilm formation on pipe materials with process waters depended on water temperature and HPC was highest on the lapse of the 141days when steady water temperature was kept, except CP of BAC. The order of precedence for biofilm formation was UTSTS. In correlation of biofilm growth rate and corrosion rate, corrosion rate of BAC was very fast with high biofilm growth rate without residual chlorine. From the high corrosion rate of all metal pipes in UT although biofilm growth rate was not remarkable, residual chlorine was confirmed to be one of main effective factors for pipe corrosion. Biofilm formation and corrosion rate model Five components for biofilm formation by the principal component analysis of SPSS included organic, corrosive, disinfectant, pH, and bacterial factors respectively. The HPC of water as a bacterial component, the concentration of Biopolymers and HOC as organic component, total residual chlorine as a disinfectant component, pH as a pH component, water temperature and TDS as a corrosive component were contained in the biofilm formation model. For prediction of corrosion rate with biofilm, HPC of coupons, total residual chlorine, pH and hardness were selected and corrosion model was formulated. Washing effect of ozone from biofilm regrowth evaluation From washing corroded pipe coupons with and without ozone water, 75% of scales on CIP coupons and 45% on CP coupons were eliminated. But the higher concentration of ozone led to the more corrosion on the surface of coupons. From the biofilm formation test with washed pipe coupons, biofilm on the surface of STS, PVC and CIP after washing with ozone water formed more easily than washing without ozone. Consequently, removal and inhibition of scale containing biofilm could be achieved sufficiently with tap water washing and in case of using ozone waters, pipe materials should be considered. Water quality monitoring after flushing of drinking water pipeline For evaluating pipe washing effect of flushing, water quality of 5 tap waters was monitored in flushed and unflushed area for 28days. The water quality of all sampling points has been deteriorated up to 10days after flushing. But after 10days, the quality of water samples showed little difference between inflow and effluent of flushed pipeline. The effectiveness of flush was validated since HPC and total coliforms in unflushed pipeline increased continuously with the elapse of time.
