Living radical polymerization technique provided the possibility to synthesize polymers with controlled molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and well-defined architectures and functionalities. Among them, one of advantages of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is adaptability over a wide range of functionality in monomer types. In this search, a well-defined block copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate-b-acrylonitrile) (PMMA-b-PAN), was synthesized by RAFT polymerization to prepare precursors for porous carbon materials. A linear relationship between ln ([M]_(0) / [M]_(t)) and reaction time of block copolymer was observed. The molecular structure of the PMMA-CDB and PMMA-b-PAN copolymers were characterized by ^(1)H NMR, FT IR, and GPC. The chain length of both blocks was well controlled via RAFT polymerization, and the observed polydispersity indices (PDI) were narrow. Thermal characterization of block copolymers was confirmed by TGA and DSC. In addition, the nano-phase separation of block copolymer was observed by SEM.
