The purpose of this study was to investigate the anthropometrics, physical strength, dietary intake, biochemical analysis and antioxidant status of male adolescent kumdo players (n=11) compared with same aged non-athletic high school student (n=11) and to determine the effects of 8 weeks' intensive exercise training on physical condition, dietary intake, biochemical analysis and antioxidant status in Kumdo players (n=10) during a winter training camp.
1. Comparison between kumdo players and control students
The breathing capacity, systolic blood pressure and muscular strength of leg were higher in kumdo players than those in control students, while skinfold thickness of left calf was significant lower in Kumdo players. The kumdo players had higher energy and other nutrient intakes except folate, vitamin B2 and vitamin A than sedentary controls. There were no differences in plasma lipid profiles (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides) and liver function enzyme activities (GOT and GPT) between the two groups. Although plasma LDL cholesterol was higher in kumdo players, the level was within the normal range. Plasma insulin concentration and HOMA-IR were significantly lower in kumdo players than those in the control groups. The Kumdo players showed enhanced antioxidant defences which was evidenced by increased plasma total antioxidant potential, concentrations of γ-tocopherol and conenzyme Q10 and decreased lipid peroxidation (conjugated dienes).
2. Effect of 8 weeks' intensive training on physical condition, dietary intake, biochemical analysis and antioxidant status in kumdo players
Body fat weight waist circumference, systolic blood pressure were reduced significantly, while fluid content in right leg and maximal oxygen consumption were increased during the training. Calorie and nutrient intakes were significantly decreased during 8 weeks' training period. There were significant decreases in activities of plasma GOT and GPT. The intensive training led to increase in fasting blood glucose, plasma insulin, and insulin resistance index (Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR) and decrease in plasma lipase activity. The training induced significant decrease in plasma total antioxidant potential and increase in lipid perxodiation parameter, while there were no changes in plasma antioxidant vitamins and erythrocytic antioxidant enzyme activities.
Conclusions: There results suggest that male adolescent kumdo players attending ca. 2 hours' training in academic terms showed relative positive effects on physical strength, nutrient intakes, plasma insulin concentration, and antioxidant status compared with same aged non-athletic male students. However, 8 weeks' intensive training (ca. 6 hours/day) in kumdo players resulted in poor calorie and nutrient intakes, altered glucose metabolism, and impaired antioxidant status.
