A study of present paper focuses on the symbolic expressions within poems by Yun Dong Ju under external perspective, which claims that his pieces resemble his own life. By doing so, the research intended to find out the relationship among his pieces, historical understanding during the colonized period, and the catholic ideologies, where his ideas rooted on. In the beginning of the ChapterⅡ, the inner consciousness of Yun Dong Ju which developed through his life and environment is studied. Also, the paper intends to observe the process in which his ego is slowly formed, as he admits historical facts. In addition, his conflicts within his mind is observed through the poems, as he claims himself as a powerless intellectual who cannot resist the injustice which his ‘colonized’ country is facing. Then, the conditions which made Yun Dong Ju to reflect himself is observed based on the catholic ideas and historical understanding. In ChapterⅢ, three aspects in which the poem is unfolded and how the forms are expressed will be categorized based on the contents studied in ChapterⅡ. From the contents of ChaptersⅠ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ, the research intends to prove that poems by Yun Dong Ju are actually a series of actions in order to establish adequate self-ego and true meaning of existence through self-reflection and confessions. Not only that, the research also focuses on the symbols which the core images possess. The present paper emphasizes the symbolism which appear in poems by Yun Dong Ju, and categorizes it largely into humane love and longing, freedom and catholic, and inner conflicts and self-reflection. The core images were also analyzed, and were proven using inductive method. Firstly, for the part of ‘humane love and longing’, the interpretation of symbols such as neighbor, nation and sky were emphasized. Through the symbols of ‘neighbor and nation’, the compassion and affection of Yun Dong Ju towards Korean people can be inferred. Also, ‘sky’ can be broadly interpreted as the symbol of an open world, idea, freedom, or mirror. Hence, it represents the ever-recollecting eternal world, or constant value within the world of self-reflection. Secondly, the words dawn, morning and cross were emphasized for the part of ‘freedom and catholic’. The symbols ‘dawn’ and ‘morning’ are linked to the religious meaning within catholic. Through the ‘cross’, Yun Dong Ju tries to reflect himself, and even shows his will to sacrifice if necessary. Lastly, in the ‘inner conflicts and self-reflection’, the liver, wind, room and mirror were pointed out as the main symbols, and were analyzed. The result of the analysis is written in the following. First of all, the word ‘liver’ of the poem「Liver」 represents both conscience and self-dignity. The complicated recognition structure of self-disruption in ‘liver’ shows that the character is able to recognize and reflect oneself through the ‘pain’. Second, the word ‘wind’ originates from the pieces「On the Street」and「Prologue」. The two-sided image of the ‘wind’ represents the hopeful situation in Korea where independence is soon to come. However, it also shows the negative aspects, as the nation and generation are facing difficulties in the reality. Third, ‘room’ is a confined space which connotes the meaning of death and pain. However, it also has a positive meaning. The room described in「A Candle is a room full of light. From such description, it is possible to in」fer that the word ‘room’ used in his poems do not only mean passive evasion from self conflicts and loneliness. Fourth, symbols both ‘mirror’ and ‘well’ indicates self-reflection and self-recognition, as the narrator looks into them. As written in the previous paragraphs, the present paper intended to find the consciousness and self-reflection of Yun Dong Ju by studying the symbols such as liver, wind, room, mirror, neighbor, sky, dawn, morning, cross and hometown.
