Aluminum is one of the most important nonferrous metals. Al and its alloys are widely used for structural components in many applications such as automobiles, aerospace, etc. because of their attractive mechanical and metallurgical properties, including high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Therefore, bonding technology of aluminum alloys is becoming more important. Aluminum brazing is a basic method for the production of many industrial parts such as heat exchanger, condenser, evaporator, heater, core and IT application. However, there are still many issues for the improvement, such as control of Mg contents, design capability and lowering brazing temperature.
Brazing is a joining process whereby a filler metal or alloy is heated to melting temperature above 450°C and distributed between two or more close-fitting parts by capillary action. Wettability of filler metal with base material, joining area and the capillary action seem to be important points to get sound joining properties after the brazing process. Small differences in melting points between filler metal and base material restrict the selection of appropriate alloys for the filler metal.
In this study, the aluminum filler metal in the semi-solid state was firstly used for aluminum brazing. Main concern is to investigate the feasibility of the application of the semi-solid filler metal to the brazing process. The Al-Si alloy was used as filler metal in the semi-solid state. Microstructures in joining area have been investigated using the optical microscopy, SEM and EDS. Main parameters in this experiment were the geometry of joining area, the variation of applied forces during the brazing process and the effects of holding times during joining before the solidification.
