Yun Heung-gil's growth novels present the most universal looks of human beings through immature young narrators' growth stories under the special situation of war. In addition, Yun Heung-gil presents the methods of reconciliation, forgiveness and healing. He shows not what is achieved immediately but what will be achieved in the future. The aim of this study was to examine Yun Heung-gil's two representative growth novels House in the Twilight (1970) and Rainy Season (1973) and recently published series novels Keunnambau Railroad Bank (2000) and Under a Bell Tower (2003) which belong to The Way to Soradan, focusing on the description of war experience and the divisional characteristic of growth novels. In addition, the investigator examined the characteristics of Korean ancient legends and folk tales as the origin of Yun Heung-gil's growth novels. The descriptive procedure of Yun Heung-gil's growth novels follows traditional descriptive principles of birth, growth and death. And want and fill, immaturity and maturity, and first and last are structuralized in a binarity manner. In this process, Yun Heung-gil's growth novels' young character, 'I', has an opportunity of internal maturity by means of passing through the rite of passage. In Yun Heung-gil's growth novels, the main narrator uses such a technique as recalling his or her growth process in the past from the present point of time. It is to modernize the past and compare the already mature present with the immature past. And the narrator in the growth novels is limited only one focal person and plays the role of simply delivering the consciousness of a leading character. This simple narrator's simple consciousness makes readers easily achieve communication. The voice of dramatized young naive narrator provides the effects of presenting the world and his internality realistically. The rite of adolescence or the rite of initiation refers to the rite of passage which adolescent boys who are remaining within a maternal tie or an infant frame must pass through in order to be qualified adult members of society. By passing through a rite that means death, they are reborn as completed and more appropriately qualified human beings. That this initiatory rite has a meaning not only in folk tales but also in modern literature is its 'symbolism'. Something that transcends the issue of time and space and comprises the difference of rite, legend and literature refers to 'initiatory symbolism'. Initiatory symbolism has the initiatory motives of death, revival, journey and return. A modern growth novel can be initiatory symbolism which has a new concept and is appropriate to express repetitive and circulative movements through the motive of maturity from boyhood to adulthood or from ignorance to knowledge. The motives of maturity appeared in Yun Heung-gil's growth novels as initiatory symbolism make the flow of story smooth and play the role of a tonic for the development of story. A representative of them is 'contraindication motive'. Contraindication motive is derived from the structural characteristic of repetition and confrontation of folk tales. In addition, its origin seems to be one dimensional nature or transcendental nature of folk tales. This kind of discussion can be a method to examine the function, role and meaning of growth motives, when the initiatory symbolism of folk tales transforms into the growth motives of modern growth novels. Besides, there are such folk tale-oriented features as the impression of humor and reversal via symbolic episodes or anecdotes, the repetition and fixation of beginning and the end, the one-dimensional nature and transcendence as unusual cruelty, and narrowing the distance between reality and unreality. In this study, the investigator concretely examined Yun Heung-gil's growth novels which have the characteristics of initiatory stories in its structures, focusing on how they transformed the folk tale features of Korean legends and what implication this transformation had. A folk tale is not static but vivid. Therefore, it can be changed with the flow of times and provide a variety of possibilities not only to modern growth novels but also to modern novelistic circles.
