As scientific technologies bring more conveniences, conventional photographers make efforts to try more various expressions of their works by using digital pictures and getting out of their darkrooms. One of those efforts is to use ink jet printers to print pictures out traditional paper called Hanji, which method has come into the spotlight in that it can express traditional and peculiar beauty. Hanji is a traditional Korean legacy made of paper mulberry trees. It feels warm and mild, and it is excellent at preserving records. Due to these advantages, studies have been conducted actively to improve the quality of traditional Hanji to be appropriate for machine printing, but there is no denying that its usability is limited compared with western paper made of wood pulp. Nevertheless, in some cases, it is necessary to use Hanji made with traditional method. For instance, the photoprint of cultural heritages are made with Hanji. Photoprint is a way of preserving cultural heritages by making counterfeits similar to originals. Paper-based cultural heritages like old paintings and old books are generally photographed to make duplications using digital pictures and printed out using ink jet printers. It goes without saying that Hanji is the best choice for printing as it is most similar to the kind of paper used for original cultural heritages. As stated above, studies on evaluating printing properties of Hanji increase as Hanji is used for ink jet printing, but most of those studies are limited to measuring physical properties of Hanji, so the results from those studies are not sufficient enough to be used as visual evaluation items of printing properties. In this study, resolutions of digitalized images of Hanji-based prints were analyzed to evaluate their printing qualities and measure their properties. Through the analysis and measurement, it was found that the resolution-based evaluation was valid. Furthermore, the following conclusions could be drawn from the results of this study: First, the measurement method applied in this study is effective enough to evaluate the printability of Hanji. Applied to 22 different kinds of Hanji, the method yielded distinct differences from each piece of Hanji measured. Also, the measurement method was found to be significant in terms of statistical analysis. To sum up, the measurement method used in this study is valid . Second, the resolution numbers of Hanji were found to make significant indices to evaluate the printability of Hanji. In previous studies, they used naked eyes to check out the spread of ink or the proportion of areas of ink spread, which did not constitute an absolute number-based index to represent the printability of Hanji. However, the MTF numbers measured in this study are available as objective data to compare the resolutions of Hanji prints. Third, the results of this study will be significant and informative data for those who use Hanji for printing. Hanji used to be chosen for printing simply based on its feel of the material or its colors, so users could not help using their experiences to determine the kinds of Hanji they want to choose. On the contrary, the method in this study uses the resolution numbers to evaluate objective qualities of Hanji, eliminating the difficulties of Hanji selection. In addition, the method is relatively simple that there is no need to use some costly analysis tools because the resolution numbers of ink jet printers and of applicable kinds of Hanji will do . Hopefully, this study results will be used as basic data to evaluate the qualities of Hanji for ink jet printing by cultural heritage-preservation experts who make photo-prints of cultural treasures and by photographers who want to use Hanji with their ink jet printers and ultimately contribute to more extensive use of traditional and peculiar Hanji in ink jet printing.
