The prevalence of heart failure(HF) is increasing globally and growing evidence has shown that dietary factors play an important role in preventing and improving prognosis of HF. However, little data on nutrient intake in Korean HF patients which are available to develop dietary guidelines for HF.The purpose of this study was to investigate nutritional status and nutrients intakes in HF. The present study consisted of 91 HF patients(mean age: 63.2±11.6, 60 males, 31 females). Anthropometric characteristics including BMI(Body mass index) and WHR(Waist-hip ratio) were somewhat over than normal range. Biochemical characteristics including serum albumin, BUN, Cr, U.A, AST, ALT, T.Chol, Tg, HDL-Chol, K, Pi and Ca were in normal range. In dietary intakes, the average intakes of energy, protein, vitamin A, D, E, C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, B12, phosphorus, sodium, iron and zinc were above the Dietary Reference Intakes For Koreans(KDRIs), but the average intakes of folate, calcium and potassium were below the KDRIs in total and males HF patients. The average intakes of females, not only folate, calcium and potassium but also vitamin B12, were below the KDRIs. In dietary intakes according to ages and sex, riboflavin intake was below the KDRIs in over 65 year male. Folate intake was below the KDRIs in all ages groups excepting 30-49 year male and 65-74 year female. Vitamin B12 intake was below the KDRIs in over 75 year male and all females. Calcium intake was below the KDRIs in over 65 year male and all females. Potassium intake was below the KDRIs in all males and females. In dietary intakes according to BMI and sex, thiamine intake was below the KDRIs in under BMI 18.5. Riboflavin intake was below the KDRIs in males under BMI 18.5, BMI 18.5-22.9 and females under BMI 18.5. Niacin intake was below the KDRIs in females under BMI 18.5. Folate intake was below the KDRIs in all BMI groups excepting males BMI 23.0-24.9 and over BMI 30. Vitamin B12 intake was below the KDRIs in males under BMI 22.9 and females under BMI 24.9. Calcium intake was below the KDRIs in all BMI groups excepting males BMI 23.0-24.9 and over BMI 30. Potassium intake was below the KDRIs in all BMI groups. Our results showed that the nutritional status of HF patients in this study were normal. In dietary intakes, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B12, calcium and potassium intakes were below the KDRIs in total or partially according to sex, ages and BMI groups. In conclusion, the good nutritional status and nutrients intakes are important in HF patients, so practical dietary guideline is needed to improve prognosis of HF.
