The central focus of this thesis is the specific question of socialization, the most commonly mentioned concern arising from home-schooling. Based on the comparison between home-schooled children and their conventionally schooled peers, the research aims to explore the possible benefits and limits of home-schooling in terms of social development. The results of the exploration presents the following main points. It is shown generally that home-schooled children are superior to traditionally schooled children in socialization. This is contradictory to the vaguely held assumption that home-schoolers are less sociable. However, according to the more specific analysis by age groups, only home-schooled children of elementary school age are more sociable, while there are no differences in other age groups. This is an implication that home-schooling would positively affect the socialization skills of elementary school aged children. Another analysis conducted on the data from the home schoolers finds that those factors such as motivation for starting home-schooling, objective for home-schooling, home-schooling period, home-schooling parents, influence their social development. The findings are as follows: 1) Among the motivations for starting home-schooling, "individual personal objective" has a significant positive corelation with their social development; 2) Among the objectives, "various experiences outside of the competitive school environment" has a stronger influence on social development; 3) The home-schooling period negatively correlates with their sociability; 4) Where at least one of parents works and where their parents have teaching experiences, the children are better socialized. From the above results, possible benefits of home-schooling can be characterized as falling into the following three broad categories: 1) Providing an educational environment where children will experience diverse optional social activities, staying away from mindless conformity to the rigid routines of the school system, 2) Monitoring and guarding children who are not mature enough to acquire self-identification against bad effects of institutional system, 3) Facilitating individualized learning which provides liberal access to knowledge and functions by allowing children to choose their optional academic areas in line with their individual personal objectives rather than enforcing uniform programs. Also, home-schooling is found to include the following limits: 1) Long term home-schoolers' social maladjustments caused by the stigma and negative viewpoint against them; 2) The family environment where parents are incapable of being actively involved in home-schooling children such as due to both parents working long hours; 3) The possible misuse of home-schooling as a tool for tutoring students at home for preparing for college entrance tests. In closing, the thesis confirms that home educated children are more sociable than their traditionally schooled peers or there is no difference between the two groups through conducting an empirical analysis on the often mentioned skepticism on socialization of home schooled children. Furthermore, it is meaningful in elaborating the issue of what are possible benefits and limits of home-schooling, thereby providing a clearer suggestion for further study.
