The purpose of this study is to improve teaching methods of proposition by identifying how first-grade students in high schools understand the concept of proposition and what kind of errors they make. I regard components of proposition as 'a proposition p->q of a false assumption' 'universal set, quantifier, connective' and 'the negation of proposition and conditional' in this study. To investigate students' understanding, the research questions were set up as follows. A. How do first-grade students in high schools understand 'a proposition p->q of a false assumption'? B. How first-year students in high schools understand 'universal set, quantifier, connective of proposition'? C. How do first-year students in high schools understand 'the negation of proposition and conditional'? To answer the research questions, I conducted a survey of 348 students who are the first-grade students in ten classes of the different three high schools in Seoul. And then I chose four students and had interviews with them to analyze the result of the survey thoroughly. the results of question A can be summarized as follows, First, even though a statement p->q of a false assumption is NOT a proposition, most students thought a statement p->q of a false assumption as a proposition. Second, students confused a definition of 'proposition' with a definition of 'set'. And they had a wrong idea that an 'if...then...'statement is a proposition. Third, students made out the proposition truth value through various problem-solving process. In this process, they confused implication with equivalence. The results of question B can be summarized as follows. First, according to a universal set, the proposition truth value is different. However, students showed errors due to misunderstanding of universal set, for example, students assumed that a universal set is a real number set. Second, there were twice the number of students who answered the quantifier proposition '‘∀x, p(x)' and ’∃, p(x)' were not a proposition compared to other questions. The errors were caused by a misconception that conditional proposition is only proposition. And most students did not distinguish quantifier from natural language. Especially, students had great difficulty in understanding quantifier 'some'. Third, students confused a connective 'or' with a natural language 'or' and they did not distinguish between 'inclusive disjunction' and 'exclusive disjunction' exactly. The result of question C can be summarized as follows. First, there are many errors because students did not understand the difference between the meaning of 'NOT' in natural language and quantifier 'NOT'. Second, students had difficulty in changing from the statement of proposition and conditional negation to conditional proposition and they had misconceptions that converse, inverse, contrapositive is regarded as negation. Third. students just learned by heart the negation of quantifier and connective automatically without understanding. Fourth, most students had difficulty in finding out negation of conditional proposition and counterexample.
