This study was to investigate chemistry teachers' explanation type and student's understanding about the graph chemical reaction rate. Also, in order to identify the influence of the difficulties the students experience, the concepts of the students who studied chemical reaction rate in high school were investigated and compared to the concepts of the teachers. For this study, 20 chemistry teachers who are studying in the graduation school and 120 high school students who study high school science were selected. The high school science textbooks were analyzed and put in operation with questionnaire about the influence by temperature and catalyst on chemical reaction rate and the relations between the graphs shown in chemical reaction rate chapter. Then they were interviewed for their responses freely. The result shows that students and chemistry teachers have low understanding about particle distribution of molecular speeds by temperature. Also students don't recognize the change of particles per unit time. Students didn't know the reason why those particles represented by the area on the left of the activation energy don't react. Students and even teacher's don't recognize exactly the meaning of collision. To explain the reason why the higher the temperature becomes, the faster the reaction rates get, almost 90% of the teachers answered the increase in the number of the very energy particles with greater energy than the activation energy. But the students tend to think of the greater frequency of collision as the reason of that. In case of students, especially the concept that the increase of chemical reaction rates is not equal to that of products amounts was the most difficult to understand. Only 27.5% of the students could recognize that catalysts lower the activation energy in this graph. This is related to that they focus on only temperature variables, ignoring other variables shown in this graph. Connecting graph Ⅱ-1 with graph II-2 makes students understand the concept of catalysts and the velocity more exactly. The reason why students have difficulty in understanding the reverse activation energy is that they haven't learned the concepts about reverse reaction. So teachers need to introduce this concept. It will be very helpful for students to understand the concept of the relationship Catalysts and reaction rates by connecting graph Ⅱ-1 with graph Ⅱ-2. The results indicate that if graphic data are presented by stages per unit time in the science textbook, it will be very helpful for students to understand the meaning of the graph. Also, teachers should introduce proper concepts irrespective of grade to explain what graphic data mean.
