Kim Seung-Ok is a Korean author symbolizing the 1960’s who tried to pursue the 'self-view of life' by showing interest in the inner world of a modern individual while avoiding grand discourses characteristic of most novels written during the war-torn era of 1950’s. The very formation of 'self-view of life', as represented in the novels by Kim Seung-Ok, leads to the establishment of self-identity, which provides an ample basis for considering his novels to be a sort of Bildungsroman, in that he pursues self-identity and seeks for psychological growth in his novels. Bildungsroman is a novel in which the process of awakening of an individual who came of age through infancy and adolescence is described with an emphasis on his inner conflict, psychological growth and environment surrounding him. Roughly speaking, there are two kinds of Bildungsroman ; civil Bildungsroman and romantic Bildungsroman. Supposedly, Bildungsroman by Kim Seung-Ok belongs to the category of romantic Bildungsroman. Bildungsroman is characterized by th transformation process of its hero who changes from immaturity to maturity, from imperfection to perfection, from lack to satisfaction. The adolescents and young men that appear in the novels by Kim Seung- Ok show a sort of attitude that pretends to be wicked by deceiving themselves and jumping on the bandwagon of mundane and naughty grown-ups. Generally speaking, the mindset of most of the adolescents and young men that appear in the novels by Kim Seung-Ok is rather dark and obscure, and strangely fearful, which may be interpreted as having a castration complex in the era of war and modernization. They wish for reconciliation and love to escape from ‘strange fear’ and ‘dread of castration’, but such a wish is helplessly trampled down in the violent and hypocritical society. The very moment their inner desire is devastated and discouraged, the heroes in the novels by Kim Seung-Ok eagerly enter the world of sleazy grown-ups in terms of a reaction to their wounds; For example in〈Dry〉'Jung-Wu', hero of〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉decides to commit a suicide, while 'Yun Hee-Joong', hero of〈A Trip to Moojin〉grows up in the dark and comes to terms with the mundane and nasty reality. Those individuals who had to grow up and survive in the mundane and nasty reality keep wandering around and wind up staying in the state of latent schizophrenia even after growing up. One of the characteristics of the individuals who appear in the novels by Kim Seung-Ok is that they have the ambivalence of searching for their existential selves and compromising with the mundane reality, but fail to achieve either and end up feeling frustrated, which shows the post-modern side of his novels, therefore. In〈Dry〉and〈The Goat Is Strong〉the growing-up process of an adolescent boy coming to terms with his negative reality is described as a sort of rite of passage. Those adolescent heroes with a pure heart deep down inside are described as longing for friendship with their friends and love for their families. Such a wish, however, is tragically devastated by oppressive war and mundane modernization. In terms of a reaction to the frustration of their wish and desire, those adolescent heroes tend to grow up in a wicked way as they enter the world of mundane and nasty grown-ups. They find themselves in a temporary state of schizophrenia as they go through such shocking experiences as death, sex or corruption. They pretend, however, to define themselves as they grow up by betraying their inner purity through some specific scapegoats in the cold-blooded and mundane world. In〈Dry〉and〈The Goat Is Strong〉respectively, ‘Yun-Hee’ and the narrator’s own elder sister become the scapegoats. In〈Dry〉, ‘I’ join the world of sleazy grown-ups by consenting with the conspiracy of male thugs to gang-rape ‘Yun-Hee’, who could have been a sole protector of his soul from the psychological scars inflicted by merciless war. In〈The Goat Is Strong〉, the family of ‘I’ belongs to the poor class marginalized by the process of modernization and experiences extreme poverty; The sexual sacrifice of his own elder sister gets her a menial job and brings his family some hope. ‘I’ come to discover the ugly side of the world and go through a mental trauma, but return to normal anyhow as ‘I’ find her working hard with pride as a bus conductress. In the meanwhile, ‘I’ grow up to become wicked while giving in to the overwhelming reality of modernization.〈Dry〉and〈The Goat Is Strong〉are close to the category of experimental ‘initiation’ that emphasizes only the impact of shocking experience while falling short of maturity and awakening, or to that of incomplete ‘initiation’ that searches for some conviction beyond the realm of maturity and awakening. 〈Life Training〉and〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉presents the gloomy process of people who struggle to live their lives as they build up their self-view of life. Building up their self-view of life which is the main theme of the novels by Kim Seung-Ok is about establishing their identity, which is a mentally growing-up process in which one discovers one’s original self while regretting wearing a hypocritical mask in the daily life. By the way, all the characters’ ‘self-view of life’ possessed by those who appear in the novels by Kim Seung-Ok are represented by dark garrets or shady attics; All of them are, however, indestructible castles and precious treasures. Such self-view of life that are available only after going through the pain inflicted by the hypocritical and worldly reality and getting over it are some potent means that allow one to stick to the real world and to survive in it; And sometimes they play a role of keeping one from becoming any more corrupt after growing up and building up one’s self-view of life. The author Kim Seung-Ok also conveys us the message that there is no such thing as a perfect self-view of life of one’s; According to him, there are both sides in one’s self-view of life, which is well represented in〈Life Training〉through the character of 'Mr. Oh', a cartoonist. An individual who builds up his self-view of life thanks to self-denial and deception survives in the real world even though he grew up sleazily, while another type of person ends up killing himself since he fails to come to terms with the corrupt reality and struggles mentally due to the disparity between the ideal and the reality. Both ‘Brother’ in〈Life Training〉and 'Jung-Wu' in〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉belong to the latter type of characters. They finally decide to commit a suicide as they fail to build up their self-view of life while giving in to the sleazy and violent real world because of a huge gap between their ideal and their reality. In the meanwhile, ‘Sister’ and 'Su-Young' show up in〈Life Training〉and〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉respectively to ridicule such an immature decision. These characters join the real world full of hypocrisy and survive in it as they go through self-deception and self-denial but succeed in building up their self-view of life. 〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉is similar to〈A Trip to Moojin〉, in that the hero comes back home after leaving his hometown only to struggle in the city. In the case of 'Jung-Wu' in〈Pocket Diary of Fantasy〉, however, ends up destroying himself out of control due to his experiences of disillusionment and subsequent wandering in the city, whilst 'Yun Hee- Joong' in〈A Trip to Moojin〉joins the real world in terms of a real-life persona as he overcomes on his own the pain that stems from his past and present.
