The purpose of this study is to investigate the recognition of the math levels and math education of the first graders in vocational high schools, to identify the problems of the math education in those schools that math teachers realize, and to pursue resolutions for them. For doing these, three research problems were established. First, what are the math levels of the first graders in vocational high schools Math levels the students accomplish were specifically investigated. Second, What are the recognitions of students in vocational high schools on math, math teachers, and math instruction for the present What the students feel about math education in the field was investigated. Third, What do math teachers in the field for the present think of the problems in math education in the aspects of classroom instruction, school curriculum, textbooks, and entrance examination? The subjects of this study were the first-graders in ten vocational high schools located in Seoul, Kyunggi, Incheon, Chungbuk, Kyungnam, and Daegu. Out of the students, 857 in three classes whose school records were intermediate were selected to be assessed. The questionnaires were performed not only for 800 students out of them but also for 50 math teachers in vocational high schools. The assessment items developed for this study were reorganized by the author of questions with levels of four to fifth graders of elementary school provided by elementary school teachers and then reviewed by teachers of elementary schools and vocational high schools on the validity and level of difficulty of the questions, the appropriateness of given vocabulary, and the problems of item statement. The questionnaires for teachers and students were organized through literature review by the author and then were advised on the research for this study by math teachers who were interested in this contents and the academic adviser. A preliminary test was performed in order to identify the duration of assessment, the statement forms of items, the number of items, and the considerations in performing the assessment tests. For the analysis for this study, those with correct answers and those with incorrect answers were classified. Then, the frequency of correct-answer subjects for the total students was analyzed by using of percentage, and the understanding of the first graders in vocational high schools on math was analyzed. Also, the questionnaires were analyzed by using of the frequency per item for the total subjects for each item. The results of this study are as follows. First, the average of the first graders in the ten vocational high schools on the assessment items whose levels were fourth grade was 75 points, while that on the items whose levels were sixth grade was 37 points. Therefore, the math level of the subjects was close to that of fifth graders in elementary schools. Second, the first graders in vocational high schools are able to perform the calculations of simple fractions and prime numbers, but have difficulty in calculating complicated fractions and prime numbers. Third, the first graders in vocational high schools think math is an essential subject but recognize it to be boring because they are not interested in the subject. Also, most students said they hardly study math after school or during vacations. Fourth, the math teachers in vocational high schools considered that the key problem in the math education of vocational high schools was the lack of pre-learning of the students. Also, according to the questionnaires, they thought that the fact sharing the textbooks and college admission system with academic high schools make math education more difficult. Many teachers have difficulties because the school curriculum is organized for the sake of college admission, unlike their actual status. Fifth, in order to improve the math education of vocational high schools, it is necessary to prepare math textbooks for the schools reflecting the math levels of the students. As for the college admission system, connection education between colleges and vocational high schools is necessary even after the national college exam in order for the students to overcome the poor progress in basic learning and to constantly improve their math levels in college. The school curriculum should be applied with flexibility in order for the students to approach to math more easily. The formation of the national college exam in which math exam is provided with only two forms should be improved. Finally, it is needed to prepare programs with which the students may pleasantly approach to math after school and during vacations.
