DME(Dimethyl ether) is a new clean energy that has recently drawing attention as an environment-friendly alternative fuel to LPG, fuel cell, and especially diesel. In addition, DME is manufactured in methanol synthesis and dehydration reaction using as a catalyst the synthesized gas (H₂, CO) made by Tri-reforming reaction with natural gas, CO₂, O₂, and stream as the ingredients. However, the use of such materials as CO₂, methanol, and other impurities reduces the purity of DME. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to optimize the DME separation process so that DME of 99% of purity can be extracted from the composition of DME, CO₂, methanol, N2(impurities). This study involves the following experiments: First, the test to clarify the validity of applying the thermodynamic model expression to Aspen Plus Process Simulator; second, the test to analyze the effect on reboiler temperature and pressure in the 1st process of CO₂ separation; third, the test to analyze the effect on reboiler temperature, pressure, and reflux ratio in the 2nd process of high-purity DME separation. The result of the simulation (Aspen Plus-version 2006.5) in the same condition with the tests above was comparatively analyzed. As a result, it turned out that the thermodynamic model expression applicable to experiments in this study is Peng-Robinson, and that in the 1st process, CO₂ composition at the bottom of the column is reduced as the reboiler temperature is high, while DME composition at the top of the column increases, which decreases the recollecting rates of CO₂, and DME composition decreased at the top of the column as the pressure is high. That in the 2nd process, DME with purity of 97∼99% was gained at the top of the column according to the effects of reboiler temperature, pressure, and reflux ratio. It turned out that as the pressure of column is low, or reboiler temperature and reflux Ratio are high, DME composition increases accordingly.
