All sorts of information provided by mass media serve as the major source by which modern people build their consciousness, values and norms. And they are mandatory for human life. These days, there are various sources from which one can acquire knowledge and information on food and nutrition. In fact, however, not all the information is correct, and it is sometimes likely to rely on distorted and incorrect information. In the future, there will be more demand for information on dietary life due to changing life patterns and growing concern for health, and one should be careful not to have an unbalanced diet amid the flood of information on food and nutrition provided by mass media. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of information on food and nutrition offered by mass media on the nutrition knowledge and dietary behavior of adolescents who acquired information mostly through mass media. The subjects in this study were 189 teens, on whom a survey was conducted. A frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were utilized to find out their general characteristics, and T-test and one-way ANOVA were employed to look for any changes in mean scores to see if their general characteristics made any differences to their dietary habits and nutrition knowledge. The findings of the study were as follows: The teenagers investigated put the most confidence in TV and the Internet among mass media. The most dominant route of food information acquisition was TV and radio, followed by the Internet, newspapers, magazines and advertising. The boys got more information than the girls over the Internet. The largest group acquired information one to three times a week. The boys showed a moderate level of interest in food information, whereas many of the girls were interested in it. The boys had the most interest in information on delicious restaurants among nutrition information provided by mass media, and the girls were most concerned about diet. As for the relationship of general characteristics to perceived nutrition knowledge and its accuracy, the rates of perceived nutrition knowledge and accuracy respectively stood at 54.65 percent and 47.09 percent. The boys and girls who had perceived nutrition knowledge numbered 54.93 percent and 53.72 percent respectively. In terms of knowledge accuracy, the boys who had the accurate knowledge outnumbered the girls who had, as the former accounted for 47.36 percent. Out of general characteristics, gender and age made no significant differences to perceived knowledge, and compared to perceived knowledge, they lagged behind in terms of knowledge accuracy. It indicated that the students had the wrong knowledge on nutrition in general. As for the usefulness of nutrition information for nutrition knowledge, the largest group found that to have a moderate impact on their knowledge improvement. Those who were relatively satisfied or unsatisfied with food information showed a tendency to score above the average on nutrition knowledge. Concerning the influence of the academic credential of parents, the students whose parents were better educated were relatively excellent in dietary behavior, and those who were worse off tended to fell behind in that regard. The general characteristics of the teens, their dietary behavior and use of mass media made no significant differences to their knowledge on food and nutrition. But the largest group that accounted for 58.2 percent applied nutrition information to real life at an average level, and the greatest group that represented 66.7 percent found that information to be of moderate use. It showed that the teenagers took advantage of nutrition knowledge provided by mass media in real life. As the roles of mass media as a vehicle to convey nutrition information are so important, a support system should be established to let adolescents benefit from the right nutrition knowledge.
