Arsenic contamination in soil and groundwater has recently been one of the most serious environmental concerns. Arsenic is ubiquitous in the earth's crust and is highest in marine shale materials, magmatic sulfides, and iron ores in which As occurs as sulfide minerals including arsenopyrite(FeAsS), realgar(AsS), and orpiment(As₂S₃). It is mobilised in the environment through a combination of natural processes such as weathering reactions, biological activity, and volcanic emissions as well as a variety of anthropogenic activities such as arsenical pesticides, industrial waste water, mine waste and drainage. Arsenic solubility in natural systems is controlled by adsorption and sorption onto iron, manganese, and aluminum oxides as well as clay minerals. Among those oxides, in particular, it has been well known that iron oxides is most effective in controlling arsenic. For this reason, this work was initiated to investigate the sorption of arsenite[As(III)] and arsenate[As(V)] on three kinds of iron oxides, such as magnetite, goethite, and lepidocrocite, which are typical iron oxides in surface or subsurface environment. Firstly, they were synthesized in the laboratory to gain pure materials for each iron oxide, and then their physico-chemical properties were characterized to evaluate their applicability as As scavenger. In addition, the adsorption features of As(III) and As(V) were compared using laboratory-synthesized iron oxides as adsorbents under carefully controlled conditions. A number of empirical results regarding adsorption isotherms and kinetics were acquired and interpreted. Especially, the effect of pH on As adsorption to model iron oxides was emphasized. Lepidocrocite had specific surface area of 94.8 m²/g, which is the largest one among those of three iron oxides considered, and point of zero charge of 6.57. The experimental results on equilibrium adsorption indicate that As(III) showed much stronger adsorption affinity onto iron oxides than As(V). In addition, the maximum adsorptions of As(III) and As(V) were observed at pH 7.0 and 4.0, respectively. As(III) adsorption increased up to pH 7.0 and decreased above pH 7. On the other hand, the adsorption of As(V) decreased steadily with increase in pH, and it might be caused by electrical repelling between As(V) and surface of iron oxides. To speak generally from the point of kinetics view, adsorption of arsenic species onto every iron oxides were investigated to be mostly completed within the duration of 4 hours and As(V) reacted faster than As(III) with the iron oxides. Among the kinetics models proposed so far, power function and elovich model were evaluated to be the most suitable ones which can simulate adsorption kinetics of two kinds of arsenic species onto three kinds of iron oxides considered.
