Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus(NRN) was widely used for food and drug in Korea. NRN has been used to treat patients for several bleeder's diseases such as metrorrhagia, epistaxis and hematuria. Recently NRN was known to have protective effect against damage on renal tissue. For these reasons, this study was designed to investigate the possibility of NRN as a new drug for CRF. The present author investigated the effects of NRN on CRF induced by combination treatment with adriamycin and cisplatin through expression levels of genes, changes in body weights and renal mass, urine volume, BUN and creatinine levels, creatinine clearance, electrolyte levels and histopathological changes in renal tissues. In this study, oral administration of NRN decreased the levels of protein and glucose in urine and also decreased the levels of creatinine in serum and urine, which were elevated by induction of CRF. Creatinine clearance was restored to that of normal by oral administration of NRN. Totally expression levels of 424 genes were restored to those of normal, which were elevated by CRF induction. And expression levels of 475 genes were restored to those of normal, which were lowered by CRF induction. Long term depression and Wnt signalling pathway are thought to be major pathways involved in NRN treatment. SLC9A3R1, HSPA8, SIAHBP1, CTNNB1, PSMD10, SYNCRIP, FGR, ORC4L, and EED will be the target of further study on the effect of NRN. Finally, in histopathological observation, NRN group showed that NRN prevented tendency of tissue damage shown in CRF group. These results imply possibility of NRN as a effective drug for CRF. For these reasons, the present author demonstrates that NRN can be used to treat patients with CRF and further study will need to elucidate the exact mechanisms involved in efficacy of NRN on CRF.
