Poulenc(1899-1963) was a representative composer who has made tremendous achievement in French artistic songs around 20th century. He composed music in all major genres, including art song, chamber music, oratorio, ballet music, opera, and orchestral music. He composed his works giving emphasis especially on orthodox French music within six movements of Neo-classicism. Due to the second world war being the social background of his works, he expressed his abstruse emotions through heavy poetic language such as death, spirit, pain, silence, and despair rather than light and cheerful tones. It is hard to find his works being restricted by natural development of a story, rhythmic patterns or formality of a poem ,but it is noticeable that his work patterns stay within one of the his six patterns, popular, simple, prayer, lyric, nimble, and extreme. This thesis examined Poulenc’s songs through various literature and scores and focused on researching and analyzing the melodic structures of five songs from among his one hundred and fifty songs. Prior to the interpretation of this thesis looked at Poulenc’s position in French music and also recognized overall characteristics of his music including structure, vocal melodies, accompaniment, modulation, harmony structure, rhythm, theme, and the development of major motive.
