The purpose of this study was expanded application of processed sulfur for internal medicine and evaluation of effects by processed methods in extracts with red ginseng. To evaluate biological activity, we prepared red ginseng with non processed sulfur extracts(GS), red ginseng with processed sulfurⅠextracts(GPSⅠ) and red ginseng with processed sulfurⅡextracts(GPSⅡ). examined contents of crude saponin, SOD-like activity, contents of total polyphenol compounds, electron donating ability and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Contents of crude saponin increased by processed sulfur, and GPSⅡ was shown highest contents in crude saponin and sulfur compared with another groups. Total polyphenol compounds was non-significantly difference in each groups but electron donating ability of GPSⅡ was shown highest activity compared with GS and GPSⅠ, SOD-like activity showed same tendency as electron donating ability at 1 ㎎/㎖concentration. Inhibitory activity of α-glucosidase was approximately same level in acarbose and GPSⅡ, another extracts decreased activity compared with acarbose. To evaluate of hypoglycemic activity in vivo, we examined blood glucose level, serum lipid profile and metabolic variables of streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rat. Experimental group was divided into 5 groups : first, it was divided into normal control group(hereafter NC group) and diabetes-induced group, and diabetes induced groups was divided into diabetic control group(DC group),treated with 300 mg/kg body weight of GS, GPSⅠ and GPSⅡ extracts groups, respectively. Blood glucose level of GPSⅡ group was decreased 18.34% compared with DC group and maintained stability range in glucose level. but GS and GPSⅠshowed high level compared to GPSⅡ. In serum lipid concentration, also showed lowest level in GPSⅡ. The concentration of total cholesterol was no significantly difference in each groups. The activity of ALT, AST and ALP was shown high level in diabetic induced groups, and lowest level in GPSⅡ, but was not shown specific toxicity by processed sulfur administration. Creatinine was shown non-significantly difference in each groups and GPSⅡ was shown lowest level in BUN. These result expressed red ginseng with processed sulfur have improvement effects on diabetes and internal medicinal application of processed sulfur have no specific toxicity in liver and kidney. and suggested that it might be a basic data about processed sulfur.
