In the electronic industry, a large amount of low strength wastewater is generated, in which tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) is a major pollutant. TMAH, which is utilized in etching the surface of silicone chip in the semiconductor manufacturing process, is known to be toxic to human beings and resistant to biodegradation. In this study, an immobilized-cell process followed by activated carbon process was developed to treat the THAM containing low strength electronic wastewater. The isolated TMAH degrading bacterium (Mycobacterium sp. TMAH-W0418) and the activated sludge from an electronic wastewater treatment process were immobilized according to a special polymerization method. A series of continuous flow experiments were carried out to optimize operating conditions of the immobilized-cell process. In terms of DOC (dissolve organic carbon) and TMAH removal rates, the optimized conditions were obtained as follows: 60% of packing fraction, 2:5 of (Mycobacterium: sludge) mass ratio and 7,000 mg/L of microorganism quantity. In order to further decrease the DOC in the effluent of the immobilized cell process, adsorption experiments were carried out by using granular activated carbon and zeolite. The results showed that granular activated carbon was a more effective adsorbent. Based on these adsorption results, a combined system, immobilized-cell process followed by the activated carbon process was established. The long term operating results showed that the combined system more effectively removed the DOC and TMAH than those of the singular immobilized-cell process. During the operating period, different analysis methods were applied to characterize the process, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), protein assay, and degradation avtivity assay. SEM results confirmed that the cells were effectively immobilized in the polymer matrix, and the thick biofilm on the surface of both polymer carriers and activated carbon granular was observed after operating period of a few weeks. In the immobilized-cell process, the microorganism quantity estimated by protein assay increased with the operating time. Based on established activity measurement method, the immobilized-cell activity maintained constant during the operating time. In conclusion, the novel immobilized-cell process followed by activated carbon process was successfully applied to treat the low strength electronic wastewater.
