The purpose of this study was to develop a social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy in order to promote young children's social-emotional competence and to analyze its effects on the improvement of emotional intelligence, prosociality, peer interaction , and multiple intelligence for young children. For this purpose, the research questions were established as follows: [Research question Ⅰ] How is a social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children composed? [Research question Ⅱ] What are the effects of the social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children? This study was conducted through the following procedures. In [Research Ⅰ], the tentative contents of a social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children was developed through reviewing relevant literatures and researches. This program consists of objective, content, proceeding stage, and teacher's role. The objectives of this program were set on the promotion of emotional intelligence and sociability for young children. In oder to attain these objectives, 14 program activities were developed through abstracting the components of social-emotional competence, that is, understanding and expression of emotion, self-regulation, social knowledge, and social skill. These program activities applied to the experiment group were composed of 5 stages which are group play therapy stages: rapport stage->expressing stage->regulating stage->applying stage->growing·concluding stage. Every session proceeded in the oder of preparation->main activity->free play->group discussion->evaluation. The teacher's roles were planner, reflector, and interpreter to children's play activities and positive mediator and limiter to the group to promote social-emotional competence. The applicability of this program to early childhood education practices was verified by agreement of play therapy specialists and experts of early childhood education. In [Research Ⅱ], the effects of the social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy on young children's social-emotional competence was analyzed. The subjects were 60 five year old young children who attended one kindergarten in K-do at M city. The subjects were randomly selected and divided into an experiment group(30 children) and a comparison group(30 children). The social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children was applied to the experiment group, whereas the social-emotional competence program based on peer conference was applied to the comparison group. The experimental treatment was performed in 14 sessions twice a week for 7 weeks from May 27, 2008 to July 11, 2008. Pre-test and post-test were conducted with 'emotional intelligence scale', 'prosocial behavior scale', 'pen interactive peer play scale', and 'multiple intelligence scale'. The data were analyzed by employing ANCOVA with SPSS 14.0 program. As a result of analyzing the effects of the program, it was found that the experiment group showed significantly higher scores than the comparison group in total emotional intelligence category and its sub-categories such as recognition and expression of self-emotion, emotional regulation and control of impulse, recognizing and considering other's emotion, and peer relationships. As for total prosociality area and its seven factors such as leadership, helping, communication, concern, proximity, sharing, and empathy, the experiment group gained significantly higher scores than the comparison group. In a total of peer interaction category and play interaction as its subcategory, the experiment group showed significantly higher scores than the comparison group, whereas the experiment group showed significantly lower scores than the comparison group in play disruption & play disconnection. Lastly the experiment group gained significantly higher scores than the comparison group in total multiple intelligence area and its sub-areas such as language intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence. However, no statistically meaningful difference between two groups was revealed in music intelligence, logic-mathematical intelligence, physical-motional intelligence, and space intelligence. In conclusion, the results indicated that the social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children is more effective than the social-emotional competence program based on peer conference in promoting young children's emotional intelligence, prosociality, peer interaction, and multiple intelligence. In addition, the results suggested that group play therapy is a effective method in increasing young children's social-emotional competence. Therefore, it is full of hope that the social-emotional competence program utilizing group play therapy for young children developed by this study will be more actively applied to promoting young children's social-emotional competence in early childhood education practices.
