A study for researching MSDS among Health-care workers and its betterments This study has been performed for showing up fundamental data such as improvements of working condition and quality of life of health-care workers by researching and investigating physical demanding, MSDS of health-care workers. And comparing these factors to other studies also. It is exact fact that the break is necessary for preventing MSDS. But routine break or scheduled break is more appropriate and requisite than intermettent or un-scheduled break. In the real work field much of break time is given intermittently or sometimes even no break time. This study is for reviewing the requirement and pertinence of routine and scheduled break of health-care workers. The cross survey had been performed to 1745 health-care workers who are in active work in A and B hospital in Seoul. And the method that were used is '2008 Investigating of risks in physical musclo-skeletal demanding work made by Korea Occupational Safety/Health Organization' The experimental group consists 911 workers in A hospital and 834 workers in B hospital. Through this survey, the occurrence of MSDS was 58.9% on shoulder, 44.9% on back and over half of the group have had shoulder pain in last 1 year, less than half have had back pain also. There was not exact correlation between having break during working hour and pain on the neck, hand, wrist, finger. But pain on the shoulder, arm, upper arm, back, leg, foot has decreasing rate with break time during work. So it seems effective that the break can prevent MSDS. With concerning above factors, following solutions can be listed. First, MSDS has correlations with inappropriate position, physical demanding. As repeating force or load on the neck, back and shoulder rises so the fatigue is getting higher. Especially lifting a patient is the most physical demanding work. So, it is required supporting moving equipment, lifting device to workers and two-men lift. Second, to prevent injuries during patient handling, it is suggested therapy method and also medications. Improving satisfaction to work and reorganizing patient handling processes are more important than physical work. Also mental and habitual things(tobacco, alcohol, life cycle) should be considered. Third, it is difficult to access or improve to their work with engineering method. So the educational method is useful such as teaching them stretching. And management group should support enough break time and enough chances of break time to health-care workers. Appropriate posture for decreasing physical demanding should be applied also. Finally, these solutions are affordable to other kinds of physical demanding works and services as a MSDS preventive program. But for the usefulness and flexibility of these solutions, the study for MSDS of health-care workers must keep going on.
