It can be found in the history of modern art that continuous change and innovation in style have been repeated according to the circumstances of each era. For instance, impressionism can be said to have shown its developmental reaction to realism by emphasizing subjective reality while cubism can be said noticeably to have shown a new paradigm to overcome the subjectivity of impressionism, which put multiple viewpoints into cubical arrangements. It is said by art historians that expressionism has its historical significance in that it focused on expressing human emotions and minds in reaction to obsession by impressionists and Fauvists with external forms, and that surrealism has its historical meaning in that it suggested new reality based on Dada's nihilism or negative minds. In the same way, abstractionism showed developmental application of surrealism and automatism in the war time, and pop art appeared in reaction to subjective aesthetics in the abstract form, focusing on the everyday, public forms. Both of these facts show, in short, that the modern art has repeated its continuous or discontinuous aspects reflecting the current of each era, connecting a single link from simple changes in forms to correct and overcome the previous styles to changes in the view of the world. Aspiration for renovation of tradition and novelty, and work methods or minds based on avant-garde art has completed the idealism which left nothing to be sought for any more in the area of minimalism regarded as the last modernism in the early 1970s. The conceptual art that brought the cyclical experiment of modernism to a logical end and to the extension of subject matters has become both the inevitable result of modernism and the initiation of post-modernistic painting. The goal of this study is to inquire into returning to figurativeness which was quickly spread in the 1980s by artists who led New Expressionism, Trans-avant-garde, Figuration Libre, and New-painting in reaction to extremely intellectual and idealistic trends. Such new paintings, taking on an international aspect, were developed in the name of 'New Expressionism" in German, 'Trans-avant-garde' in Italy which meant overcoming Dadaistic modernism of Marcel Duchamp, 'Figuration Libre' in France which showed the form of public art movement for human and civic rights, and 'New-painting' in the US which had the meaning of renewing images. Critics gave the name 'New Expressionism' to this trend in the sense of recognizing expressive will of artists, who showed individual national differences. In order to explore the most efficient method that New Expressionists used to reveal their inner worlds, the focus of this study is put on expressive features of images and a variety of expressive techniques. Such inquiry is said to intend to revive descriptiveness, return to images, and go back to traditional easel paintings, in which images of violent feelings that had been oppressed were expressed using water colors whirled with gesture and quick drawing. This study examined how New Expressionism had been developed in each country, and also examined through what images and in what forms the inner consciousness of humans had been expressed. The return to figuration and the emphasis on expressiveness in New Expressionism means breaking with the viewpoints of linear development that led art to a dead end by way of 'the dematerialization of art objects'.
