As society has changed into an age of information from an age of industrialization, corporations have put much more emphasis on the creation of knowledge than mass production. Consequently, office organizations have now more than ever before become interested in communication among staffs. It is because the process of delivering one's opinion via communication is an essential and fundamental function in today's diversified information and industrialization organizations, as well as being an indispensable interchange directly related to the members' job activities. Such communication is classified into two types: formal communication and informal communication. The former refers to communication based on formal relations among members and it occurs when the systematic hierarchy is clear, whereas the latter occurs through routes other than formal communication and disregards classes or occupation types. Informal communication’s speed of information delivery tends to be faster than that of formal communication, and it has advantages of forming connection with members and inducing creative ideas. Therefore, recent corporate environments emphasizing creative productivity have more interests in creating atmospheres that activate informal communication, with which staffs canexpress their opinions and share a number of information more freely than with formal communication. In this aspect, this study examined the characteristics that vitalize such informal communication within organizations and analyzed how these characteristics have been applied to space through diverse cases. The result of this analysis summarizes as below. First, for communication network pattern types, a single pattern type could be expressed in space independently, or sometimes multiple pattern types could be overlapped in space. Among them, the interconnected network pattern type appeared most noticeably in space where informal communication was tried to be activated. This pattern type requires the space where active exchange of information can occur among staffs. Meanwhile, in some spaces, circular or wheel-shaped network pattern types appear, which are seen as the intention of not repeating trial and error on open office types where staffs had been severely disturbed by the excessive openness and had suffered from a lack of concentration and noise. Second, the representative spatial characteristics that canvitalize informal communication are openness, possibility, centroid, activity driver, mobility and changeability. These characteristics have also been accepted in space independently or synthetically as the interconnected network pattern types, thus inducing informal communication. Third, according to the case analysis results of existing office spaces, it is found that there is a close relationship between interconnected network pattern types and the informal communication activation characteristics, which must stimulate perfect information exchanges among all the members within organizations based on group tasks. Therefore, when planning space activating informal communication, it is believed that interconnected network pattern types and six informal communication activation characteristics should be well-harmonized in space design. Finally, conducting a field trip is essential to analyze the activation level of informal communication for creativeness enhancements in office space, and ultimately, it is able to analyze practical results when conducted alongside performance evaluation. In this regard, it is expected that informal communication within office will be further activated in the future based on the fundamental analysis regarding the spatial characteristics derived from this study.
