Irony in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from Feminist Perspectives

In Pride and Prejudice, Austen shows the status of woman restricted in financial, social and legal conditions. However, she treats this issue implicitly using irony. Irony is an excellent way for authors to combine wit and drama at the same time. It works well in many parts of Pride and Prejudice. The irony centered in Pride and Prejudice comes from the conflicts in the marriage which engages with suppressive social ideas and economic constraints on woman. Therefore, the target of the irony is all connected with the marriage. Actually, almost all the characters in the novel in their opinions and attitudes toward marriage are the target of the irony.
In this thesis, I examine the irony from feminist perspectives. The time of the novel's publication was experiencing the change of the social structure and hierarchy owing to the capital flow as a consequence of the industrial revolution. Females came to be recognized as independent beings. Elizabeth's independent features reveal Austen's rebellious consciousness against dominant ideology which was changing at that time. Elizabeth stands out remarkably against other stereotyped characters who Austen arranges around the heroine. And these stereotyped ones are criticized by means of irony.
Under the society in which the male occupied the center of the social structure, irony is designed in order to underline woman's social restraints. It is Austen's survival strategy as a woman writer because it would have not been permitted if she wrote the fact as it was.
I conclude this novel is a progressive work which describes not only the female suppression under the social structure, but also a possibility of solution by making heroines example to overcome such repression.
