Background and Objectives: Abdominal obesity is increasingly recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The cardio-metabolic risk associated with abdominal obesity is attributed to the presence of visceral adipose tissue, which promotes insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between abdominal obesity and hypertension. Methods: A total of 2,648 healthy examinees who were examined in Kosin University Gospel Hospital from November 2004 to December 2007 were enrolled in this study. Height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure of subjects were measured. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure≥130 or diastolic blood pressure≥85 mmHg. Results: There were significant positive correlations between WC and systolic blood pressure and between WC and diastolic blood pressure in both men and women. The prevalence of hypertension in men (50.4%) was significantly higher than in women (33.1%). When WC was divided by the quartile, the prevalence risk of hypertension increased as the quartile of WC increased. In men, the odds ratios were 1.73 (95% CI: 1.13-2.65) for WC 80.1-85.9 cm, 1.56 (95% CI: 1.01-2.40) for 86.0-89.9 cm, and 2.61 (95% CI:1.73-3.15) for WC≥90 cm. In women the odds ratios were 2.34 (95% CI: 1.73-3.15) for WC 78.0-83.9 cm and 2.73 (95% CI:2.00-3.72) for WC≥84 cm. Conclusion: The prevalence risk of hypertension was increased as WC increased in both men and women. Preventive measures of hypertension should be provided to the persons with abdominal obesity.
