The aim of this study is to prepare the red and black pigments developing their colour in high temperatures regardless of firing atmospheres. Colour is one of the important characteristics of ceramics. Colour gives beauty and variety of ceramic products. Pigments must have thermal and chemical stability and insolubility for the use of high temperature applications. Pigments in using low temperature for decorating pottery products are many kinds but rare in high temperature. Pigments based on spinel and zircon structures are widely used in ceramic products, because they can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environments. There are some pigments for pottery among 6,000 kinds of pigments prepared in commercial products. Especially, red development cases used toxic CdSe pigments. Traditionally, red development with copper are generally used but it is not stable in color development due to volatilization of copper in high temperature. The first experiment carried out to investigate the incorporated amount of chrome in YAlO₃ and calcination temperature for proper red development. Cr ion incorporated pigments of sphene structure or Fe ion encapsulated zircon one used for red-shade, but colour development are not compatible with CdSe pigments. CdSe pigments have limitation imposed on their use by healthy and environmental requirements. Demand on red pigment has been increasing for their brilliant colouring development and decoration effects. Therefore, the research for new ceramic pigments in a high-priority area. Researches for high temperature pigments are undertaken on spinel and sphene and extended to garnet, pyrochlore and perovskite structures. In this study, perovskite-type red pigment and spinel-type black one are investigated. Red development in (YAlO₃ : Cr) structure is similar to ruby in corundum structure. The similarity is due to the octahedral space of six oxygen ions in YAlO₃ structure. Red pigment are prepared by substituting for six-fold coordination aluminum(Ⅲ) induced by chromium(Ⅲ) using as chromophore. In YAl_(1-x)Cr_(x)O₃(x=0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05), amounts of Cr substitution are from 0.01mole to 0.05mole. Calcination temperature ranges are 1350℃ to 1600℃. At the maximum temperature, compositions without mineralizer formed some phases such as Y₃Al_(5)O_(12), Y₄Al_(12)O_(9) and unreacted Y₂O₃. Therefore, mineralizers such as BaCO₃, Na₂CO₃, NaF, MgF₂ and Li₂CO₃ are used in composition mixtures with 6wt% to form perovskite phase. However, perovskite phase were not formed. M. Shipour's mineralizer combination ratio, NaF, MgF₂ and Li₂CO₃(6wt%, 3:2:1) added to composition mixtures regularly. Red intensity has improved according to amount of chrome. To find out proper incorporated amount of chrome and sintering temperature, synthesized powders were applied to tiles with lime glaze. The best red colour turned out when chrome is 0.04mole and temperature is 1450℃. The a^(*) value of powders in CIE Lab are from 22.00 to 33.69, and red development applied to tiles in underglaze are proved in both oxidation and reduction states. The a^(*) value on tiles are 14.75 to 29.71 in oxidation atmosphere and 14.78 to 30.86 in reduction one. Pigments calcined with 1450℃ developed stable red colour in powder and underglaze like in pigments calcined with other higher temperatures. Chrome is controlled because oxidation from Cr(Ⅲ) to Cr(Ⅵ) takes place spontaneously when the material is thermally treated, as cadmium red are regulated by law due to healthy and environmental problems. By consideration of this point of view, Fe as chromophore is selected to decrease amounts of Cr. The second experiment using chromophores Cr and Fe to prepare pigments for stable red development in high temperature carried out. To investigate Fe amount substituting for Cr, sample incorporated Cr 0.04mole and calcined at 1450℃ as starting sample was selected. The result turned out that samples substituted Cr for Fe up to 0.02mole showed red colour. Red development using Cr(0.04mole) only proved a^(*) value in CIE Lab 27.65, in Fe 0.01mole and 0.02mole substituted cases a^(*) value are 21.08, 22.38 respectively in oxidation atmosphere. In reduction, they are 27.26, 22.17 and 23.56 respectively. Use of Cr and Fe together changed the absorption band to shorter wavelength, then the red colour is slightly darker. In case of using chlorides instead of oxides as colorants materiasl, red colour development are increased expecially in reduction state (Tables 4.3, 4.5). In case of black pigments, pigments were synthesized from Fe₂O₃, CoO, Cr₂O₃, MnO₂. The synthesized pigments are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and UV-vis spectroscopy. All compositions with 10mole% manganese dioxide base on triangular batches. Calcination temperature was 1350℃ for 1.5 hours. Pigment with most amount of iron or chrome presented hematite and eskolait as principal phase and spinel one as second phase respectively. Pigments with containing 10mole % CoO also exhibited double-phase. Pigments with more 20mole % CoO formed spinel phase. Tiles applied glazes with 6wt% pigments are tested at 1260℃ in oxidation atmosphere and 1240℃ in reduction one. Pigments with increasing cobalt or chrome contents showed bluish or greenish-shade, respectively; therefore their containing amount haven't to exceed 50mole % in cobalt and 30mole % in chrome respectively to make black pigment. By Rietvelt method, it turned out spinel pigments consist of some spinel phases not single spinel phase. For example, pigment No.2 consist of Fe₃O₄, CoFe₂O₄ and FeCr₂O₄ not only CoFe₂O₄. When spinel pigment was applied to glaze, pigment with more containing iron in composition mixtures developed stable black colour regardless of sintering atmospheres.
