Pr^(3+)는 445, 480~490, 592㎚에서 각각 ³H₄→³P₂, ³H₄→³P₁, ³H₄→³P₀, and ³H₄→¹D₂, 로 f-f transition 에 의한 스펙트럼이 관찰되었고, Pr^(4+)는 302~380, 400~500㎚에서 2t_(2g)→ f, t_(1g)→ f 로 f-d transition 에 의한 흡수 스펙트럼이 나타났다.

The present research aims to determine the optimum compositions and synthetic conditions of pink, yellow, blue and green zircon pigments for high temperature ceramic glaze and bodies using Fe₂O₃, Pr₆O_(11) and V₂O₅, as well as to carry out an analysis to find out the formation mechanisms of the pigments. Pink zircon pigment in which Fe is included was synthesized by sol-gel method without using mineralizer. Whereas yellow, blue and green zircon pigments of diverse color variation using prasseodymium and vanadium were synthesized by ceramic method under oxidizing atmosphere Fe-ZrSiO₄ pink pigment was synthesized by sol-gel method at low temperatures without using minieralizer. Iron content was varied by using 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.6 moles of FeCl₃˙ 6H₂O. The characteristics of the pigments calcinated at 600~1300℃ were analyzed to investigate the synthetic condition for optimum coloring as well as the pathway of iron inclusion. In the case of Fe-ZrSiO₄ pigment, hematite inclusion occurs simultaneously with the zircon crystallization, and the presence of the hematite included in zircon matrix is the major factor that gives good coral pink coloring.1) The results of the experiment showed that the optimum synthetic condition of the pigment giving coral pink coloring was FeCl₃ ˙ 6H₂O 0.2mole (Fe₂O₃10%) and the calcination temperature of 1300℃. Crystallization of hematite, which is the trigger of the pigment coloring, began at 800℃ in the Fe^(3+) state; and the crystal grew until the temperature reached 1300℃, when zircon almost became a single phase and hematite began to be included in zircon to contribute to red coloring. Pr-ZrSiO₄ yellow pigment was synthesized by ceramic method using rice husk ash, which is an amorphous silica, as starting material and praseodymium as chromophore, to investigate the effect of calcination condition on the synthesis and coloring of the pigment. This pigment was shown to be greatly affected by the change of holding time during the synthesis. The optimum synthetic condition of the pigment giving intensive yellow coloring was the Pr₆O_(11) content of 5% and the calcination condition of 2step holding - that is, 6 hours of holding at 700℃, the initial reaction temperature, followed by 18 hours of holding at 900℃, when zircon grows. The change of holding time - holding at the initial reaction temperature and an additional holding at the highest temperature – resulted in maximized pigment coloring by maximizing the growth of zircon and also by stabilizing the inclusion of Pr ion. Praseodymium existed in the 3^(+) state at 800℃, when zircon began to be produced; then it was converted to the 4^(+) state during the holding at 900℃, when zircon grew rapidly. Thus the valance of the Pr which was involved in the enhancement of the pigment’s yellow coloring was shown to be 4^(+).
V-ZrSiO₄ blue pigment was synthesized by ceramic method through the inclusion of vanadium in zircon. The optimum synthetic condition and formation mechanism of the pigment were investigated by varying the content of V₂O₅, calcination temperature and holding time. When the amorphous silica, rice husk ash, was used in place of silicon dioxide for synthesis, the optimum synthetic temperature could be lowered down to 750℃; while the optimum composition for good blue coloring was V₂O₅ O₂ mole% and NaF 0.5mole%. The initial stage of the pigment synthesis was the period from 500℃ to 700℃, when the reaction began to expand; during this period there was a phase transition of silica from α-quartz to β-cristobalite. Part of NaF reacted with V₂O₅ to form the intermediate phase NaVO₃, while the rest reacted with SiO₂ to form SiF4 in the vapor state.9) The final stage was the period from 700℃ to 800℃: during this period part of SiF4 volatilized, while the rest expanded into the M-ZrO₂ lattice promoting the production of zircon and thereby leading to the synthesis of the pigment. Simultaneously with the production of zircon, V^(4+) was included in the host matrix, the pigment giving turquoise blue coloring. According to the results of UV-Vis analysis, the absorption bands of V^(4+) were observed at 290㎚ and 640㎚ due to the d-d transition2)of ²B₁ → ²A₁ and ²B₁ → ²E. The results of the Raman spectrum analysis of the synthesized pigment showed the assignment of zircon internal modes at 1003, 971, 950, 625, 434, 389, 353, 219, 201 and 181㎝-1; and V-O vibration internal modes at 950, 912, 882, 498 and 473㎝-1. (V, Pr)-ZrSiO₄ green pigment was synthesized by ceramic method using vanadium and praseodymium together. The contents of V₂O₅ and Pr₆O_(11), calcination condition and the amount of mineralizer were varied to investigate the optimum synthetic condition of the pigment and the effect of mineralizer on the valance of V and Pr.
The result showed that optimum coloring was obtained when synthesis was carried out with the addition of V₂O₅ O.1 mol%, Pr₆O_(11) 6 wt%, NaF 0.2mole% and NaCl 0.3 mole% involving 3 hours of holding time at 800℃. In this case, zircon yield was 91%, and it appeared that the use of NaF and NaCl together as mineralizer was more efficient than the use of a single species. Especially, NaCl promoted the production of zircon at 700℃. The UV-Vis analysis of the synthesized pigment showed that the intensity of the V^(4+) peak decreased as the degree of green color increased because of the absorption bands at 290㎚ and 640㎚ caused by the d-d transition2) of ²B₁ → ²A₁ and ²B₁ → ²E. In the case of Pr ions, it was shown that both 3^(+) and 4^(+) increased when they were involved in green color tone through the inclusion in zircon crystal. The absorption bands of Pr^(3+) were found at 445, 480~490 and 592 ㎚ due to the f-f transition of ³H₄→³P₂, ³H₄→³P₁, ³H₄→³P₀, and ³H₄→¹D₂, respectively; while the absorption bands of Pr^(4+) appeared at 302~380 and 400~500n㎚ due to the f-d transition of 2t_(2g)→ f and t_(1g)→ f, respectively.
The results above showed that zircon pigments were greatly affected by holding time and the kind and amount of mineralizer during calcination, and that synthetic temperature could be lowered by using the amorphous silica, rice husk ash, as the raw material of SiO₂. These pigments were also characteristic in that they needed different kinds of mineralizer and calcination conditions depending on the color former used. Accordingly, the codoping of zircon with two kinds of color former was considered to synthesize pigments of quite diverse color tones.
According the results of this research, the metal ions (Fe, Pr, V) used as color former underwent employment and inclusion at the final stage of zircon production, and the unique valance involved in this process determined the formation mechanisms of the pigments of diverse coloring. The vivid red, yellow and blue coloring of the coral pink, praseodymium yellow and vanadium blue pigments was due to Fe^(3+), Pr^(4+) and V^(4+), respectively. Whereas the vanadium praseodymium green pigments gave a range of coloring from blue green to yellow green due to V^(4+), Pr^(3+) and Pr^(4+).
